Well, my wife and I will be in Perth this July. We'll be working at a trade show, but will have a few extra days there, as well as a few days in the Sydney area. Any favorite pubs or homebrew things to see or do? Or maybe some must have beers to look for. Oh yeah, 1st time to Australia, and we're coming from northern California.

Thanks,
Dave

Can't speak for Perth or Sydney but as a regular visitor to LA and the Bay area I'd suggest you not expect too much that will challenge what you find at home in the way of micro/craft beers.

Talking quantity so get your hackles down, boys.

Enjoy your visit, Dave!

Ah, but we enjoy beers of all types...not just the US west coast, high hopped ones! We enjoy drinking local beers as much as we can. I will however, miss my own black IPA while I'm gone! Are any brewers or homebrewers making those?

Dave

In Sydney I can recommend:

The Local Taphouse: Beer bar in Darlinghurst a short cab ride from the middle of town. Good Local Laughs comedy on a Sunday night.

Rocks Brewing @ Harts Pub: Craft brewery in Sydney with their own and other local craft beer on tap.

Lord Nelson: Pub and brewery in The Rocks with some very tasty ales.

All can be done in a day pub crawl. Check out the 2010 AHB Sydney Pub Crawl Thread to see what the locals think.

Thanks Josh, but what is barls Wurtenberger Ale?

barls is a member of ahb.

His Wurtenburger Ale is a beer brewed by barls, late hopped with his home-grown Wurtenburger hops added to the cube. Then swapped in the ISB Cube Swap.

Very tasty Pale Ale fermented with Wyeast Pacman.

Black IPA's are fairly rare here at the moment. You'll only find a handful of references in this forum, although I'm sure that we'd all be interested to see your recipe.

Commercially speaking, Murray's brewery made one as part of their monthly seasonal releases.

Overall, I think that you'll have to bring your own to share with us! :D (Hills Brewers have a pizza night in NW Sydney on the last Tuesday of the month. One of our brewers has made a couple of black American ales so you may even be in luck)

Thanks Rukh, I'll post the recipe soon.

I'll try to bring a little homebrew with us, but those weight limits make it tough!

Make sure you seek out Tooheys New whilst in Sydney. Very rare beer, but well worth it if you can get your hands on some.

There's always a funny bugger somewhere.
But actually try Tooheys Old.... one of the only megaswills here with real flavour.
+1 for Ruhk's Hills Brewers invite. I'm sure we can make an exception for an OS guest!

+1 for tooheys spew ( I think you intentionally spelt it wrong mckenry?)

There's a few micros in the swan valley to the east of perth - Feral, Elmars, Duckstein, Ironbark and Mash

Little Creatures in Fremantle. Stop in at Clancys Fish Pub as well for a variety of beers.

I would say if you are going down the path of trying local mega brewery beers, Obvious choices for me would be Coopers range. Also take a Sheaf Stout instead of the Tooheys Old.

But on the otherwise steer clear & get your hands on some local craft beers!

When in Sydney, if you find yourself near Homebush you could drop into Paddy's Brewery @ Flemington for a beer & a feed.

Little Creatures in Freemantle, not far from Perth. It's a must

Dave maybe us Perthies can organize a piss up and BBQ at someones house! It will be winter over here in July so a bit on the cool side.

Cheers Andrew

A pub crawl in freo would be better

A bit on the cool side? What do you consider cool? 10? Just curious.

And you can actually get Tooheys New in the states as well as Cooper's Pale. No Tooheys Old or Little Creatures Pale though.

Wow! Great advice! So, here's my recipe for a Black IPA (but it's closer to a black pale ale). It scored very well in a local Homebrew to Probrew contest, but got beat out by an amazing double pale ale (not a double IPA). If you can't get the German Saphir hops, any good citrus hop will work, and you can sub chocolate malt for the carafa II. This is not as intense as some Black IPAs, but it's very easy to drink.
sorry about the pounds and quarts!
