Hey all,

Brewing a coopers european lager with BE2 and have decided to chuck in some hops for the first time...chose some saaz pellets.

My LHBS guru advised me on a 10 minute boil alow to cool then strain into the extract before topping up with water. Am i on the right track or is there a better method?

cheers

Or just throw them in with the (uncooled) water they were boiled with.

I was mislead and expected to see pictures of Czech virgins from the Saaz region hopping past eligible bachelors as part of some traditional mating ritual.....fantasy ends....

If you care about the yeast at the end of the ferment, i.e. want to use it again, then strain. If it is going to the compost heat, don't stain.

The basic rule of hopping (as I understand it) is 30-60 minute boil time adds bitterness, ~15 mins flavour and 0-5 mins aroma.
Times being from end of boil time.

And you will need to strain unless you use a hop sock or are prepared to have 'gunk' in your fermenter.

You're on the right track. Enjoy!

No need. I often chuck in some pellets at day 4. Alternatively you can make a strong hop tea (I have a neat glass teapot from an op shop dedicated to hopping) and just pour it in sediment and all. The dust ends up in the bottom in the trub and doesn't generally carry over into the bottle. However I would tend to take out any 'sediment reducers' you have in the fermenters as the hoppy material can get caught in the slot.

Ideally rack to secondary later on to get the beer off the major cake. Also if you use a bottling 'cane' the odd bit of crap can get caught in the mechanism but you can dismantle it and clean it out.

Works out a third of the cost of hop teabags.

Sorry Brewtus but i thought it a good way to catch attention! But the czech virgin mating ritual did take me to a happy place as well ... (until the mrs checked up on me to see what i was up to...)

Brew done, 15 min boil then strained to fermenter. So i guess these will be my nye beers if the recomended 12 week bottle ageing is to be followed...

So for something drinkable before then...hmmmm...

Agree with all said... Although dont stress about a sock or straining, just let your brew sit for a couple of days once finished and the hops will fall to the bottom, 40+ batches and have had about 3-5 bottles with actual hops dregs in them... no drama!

Mate, you want to boil the hops in something that is at about 1040 SG to get utilisation! So..

eg, Go about 100g of DME per litre of water and then boil for different times for different results:

Again I claim fame to butters graph B)
