Long time lurker and kit brewer, first time poster. For my next brew I'm planning a very highly-hopped IPA style. Whilst I've done a number of IPA style beers in the past using combinations of boiling, dry-hopping and teas with good results, this time around I was considering using a slightly different (possibly novel) idea for extracting the most flavor and aroma from the hops.

Using an old Moka I am planning on making a tea or extraction of sorts from at least some of the hops. It seems like the high heat, steam and pressure should do a pretty good job of extracting the hop oils whilst not subjecting them to excessively high temperatures for an extended time. Also, I tend to have limited time and facilities available for brewing, so this method - if it works - should be a relatively easy inclusion to the process.

I know that making a "hop tea" prior to addition to the brew seems to be a somewhat popular technique, but has anyone tried something similar to using a Moka for hops? Share your experiences, advice or thoughts.

Haven't tried, but I had this exact thought the other day looking through some threads about using a coffee plunger for adding aroma hops into the keg, since we have a moka pot but not a plunger.

I reckon it should work fine and should extract some good aroma, but haven't got around to trying it yet. Let us know how it turns out!

Fourstar made a thread about a similar idea using an espresso machine a while back. Might be worth prompting him for his experiences?

I think the espresso machine was worthwhile as it extracts at 75 deg~ but i dont think i will use super high AA hops next time i attempt it. I think the tried and true method of a simple hop tea plunged in a french press does the trick well enough.
