Well brew day today went great!.

Made a Bohemien Pils, 45 liter batch.

9.5 KG of grain, 400g of Saaz and a wonderfull smell in the garage that is still there new :)

Here are a few pics of some of the things i raised as discussions and put into action on thje weekend.

The underletting was the best thing i have ever done. i changed a couple of fittings around and off i went.

Tipped the dry grain in and underletted with a W:G of 2:1 (used about 20 liters)

pics...

Gotta love underletting. Probably the single best AG trick I've learned so far.

the mash return was great too.

It helped clear the runoff in no time and made sparging a breeze.

I made a patch lead from the HLT to the return to fly sparge 5 min before i had to sparge, i forgot to make one

There is a pic of the grain after sparging, the fines are settled perfectly on top of the grain, where they should be. I have never had this happen for me before.

here is the grain after the mash...

Nice setup there mate.
how well does your temps hold in that mash tun?

VL.

I found another really good trick for mashing in today, make someone else stir. Makes things even easier.

Wish I had thought of that :D

Now.....

The Mongolien burner..... ahh the burner.

Best bloody $55 i have spent!

It puts out enough flame to heat 3 kegs and put no soot on my keg what so ever!!!!!

I used to get 3 liters/hr evaporation with the little 3 ring burmer but got somewhere between 7 and 8 with this puppy and did it boil :)

rollin rollin rollin :p

here are sone pics

one of the flame on hi and the other after a 75 min boil while cooling (no soot)

the first is a bit blury, 2 second hand held exposure <_<

Hello all

Can someone please explain to me what underletting is? I know it was discussed in another thread but I'm too lazy to look and read through every post to find it.

Thanks in advance

Steve

taked 10 min per post on this friggen dial up.

I get about a 1 or 2 deg drop over an hour.

I found if i mashed in at 2L/KG i can add a boiled jug now and then to keep the temp right without making the mash too thin.

Will do this till the HERMS setup is going, not long now, just need the stand.

cheers

Do you have any problems with the bottom of your hop sock floating? I used mine for the first time today, it made life easy when cleaning.

underletting is letting the water fill into your mash ton fulkl of dry grain from the botton of the mash ton.

It works great.

here is my underletting setup

I pump ( well actually it just siphoned down, i never ran the pump) from the HLT up top to the botton of the mash ton mash ton

does this help?

Tony,

The G&G website says that you use a low pressure reg... Do you use a 2kg/h reg or a 3.5 kg/h reg for the mongolian burner? And can you regulate the flame with the tap very well? I'm looking at getting a burner soon... It may have to be the mongolian...

Steve,

Underletting is where you put all of your grain in the mash tun and introduce the hot water through your manifold under the grain... Underletting. No dough balls, no stirring required (unless you want to stir but there is not need to).

Tony

Thank you for the info. Must try it sometime and see if it helps my brewing.

The other thing is you appear to have a stutter when it comes to typing "mash ton" (TIC)

Cheers

Steve

na mate it doesnt float.

I built a SS mesh basket to hold hop flowers a while back. I posted a story on here about it. I got sick of the bloody flowers blocking the pump and the mesh basket solved this.

I just sit the nylon filter (250 micron) in the basket, its a perfect fit and it works great.

here is a pic of it draining out after cooling.

And the finished product.

All that work and all i get is a plastic drum full of sweet wort that will be firmented at 8 or 9 deg with Chech pils yeast

ahh it will taste great though..... 400g of saaz, 280 of them in the last 20 min :D

yeah me and jazman went to the same typing school

Im a bit rough and ready on the keybourd im afraid. if you cant read it then it probably wasnt important anyway

cheers

tony did you use saaz flowers in this brew? Where do you buy them from?

VL.

Ahhh the regulator.

It is an old regulator i stole off the wifes BBQ that belonged to her ex :p

Its old and i didnt even know there were different ratings on low preasure regs.

It would be a bit much for a 50 liter keg doing 20 to 25 liter batches i recon.

the 3 ring burner i have did them great but couldnt keep up with the 45 to 50 liter boils.

G&G sell the tap and stuff for it for a bout $33 i think but i went to the plumbing place and got a tap and some fittings for under $10 and put it together myself. (see the rambo mongolian burner post i did) but i also got some of the fittings from work so best to get the full kit if you are not so mechanicly inclined. The tap has to be approved for gas use too. Mine is. And you need special "gas tape" on the fittings, not the regular thread tape. Its yellow and thicker.

cheers

Oh while im here i will post some pics of how i do a decoction.

cheers again

Joel: My regulator is a 2 KG/hr unit, i just went and checked it. Bloody hell i wouldnt want any more

VL: I only used pellets, you can get them anywhere :)

Oh and the new mash paddle worked much better that the old piece of 3/8" wooden dowl. It actually stirred the mash and got a consistant temp in under a minuite :D

ahhh it just gets better and better.

cheers
