I cant see us needing Hauritz, go Ronnie McDonald for sure... not that I rate him either....!

My money is on Hilfi, that's who I'd be playin. the token fast food rep has yet to impress in anyting I've seen of him, and hauritz, well there's more talent in north, clarke and katich...heck, i bet even ponting and haddin can bowl better...

Black Sheep Ale on tap here so I'm ready. :icon_drunk:

Lets hope for another 2005 like contest, close, but with the result reversed!

GOT HIM YES! WHAT A CATCH!

Great catch indeed.
Am glad Hilf has got a game, Siddle is looking on the money too....

Bloody hell, I fell asleep at 3 for 80 odd, get up this morning to find the score at 7 for 336. Looks like I'll be able to watch the Aussies bat tonight before my bed time. Gee there was some swing happening out there, the Poms weren't handling it too well were they.

wicked first day by the aussies. mitchell was good i thought mixing it up with the slower balls. should of waited a bit longer to bring haruitz the spinner on tho imo.

It was good to see Hauritz knock Pietersen down a peg; although he made 60ish, he clearly underestimated Hauritz and he got what he deserved. Pietersen reckon's he didn't pre-empt the shot, but who in the hell sweeps a ball that pitches wide on the off side, almost off the pitch?

Agree fents, like wait until we have already won, and then let haruitz practice a bit. yeah, he took one, but that was sloppy batting, nothing to do with the bowling talent IMO.

7-336

Hmmm, i like the 7 wickets, the 336 is a but more than i would have liked. Hopefully we knock off the tail quickly.

As noted, the ball is swinging quite nicely and we dont need reminding of what happened last time the ball was swinging so well in the UK.

Hopefully we have learned some lessons since then.

1st wicket - what a catch!
2nd wicket - perfect bouncer
3rd wicket - the sucker punch, nothing more embarrassing than dollying a catch off a slower ball you failed to pick.

Went to bed after the 1st session.....

Yep, looks like we are in for a good series. I need to belt out a few more bitters to keep me going! :icon_drunk:

As with the 1st day i only watched the 1st session.

So nearly turned off the box - couldnt deal with the meek bowling efforts against the tail.

Seriously, i think we are going to have issues getting 20 english wickets without leaking too many runs. Only Hilfy looks capable of troubling the batsmen. We really should have picked Clark and hope that Lee is fit soon. I though Marcus North is an allrounder yet he didnt bowl a ball?

Was good to wake up and hear the final score on day 2. I have both Katich and Punter in my ABC fantasy team The problem as i see it is that even if we get a big 1st innings lead we lack the firepower to dismiss england cheaply. We still seem to rely on KP getting himself out.

I wonder if turning to Clarke and Katich earlier would help? The wicket has plenty of turn, this backyard tweaker was salivating at the turn a mere offy was able to get, imagine what a quality wrist spinner would be doing.

I would've liked to see North bowl, just to satiate my curiosity, but:

- Hauritz bowls finger spin, turning into the right hander
- Katich bowls wrist spin, turning into the right hander
- Clark bowls finger spin, turning away from the right hander
- North bowls finger spin, turning into the right hander

Hauritz is the main spinner, and with those other options, North would have to come after those three for variety's sake. If Hauritz wasn't in the team, we'd have 3 part timers bowling with different approaches. This is the reason why I think having both Hauritz and North is redundant... and seeing the pitch develop now I would've chosen Hauritz for the more reliable bowling (accuracy in hitting the rough) as more valuable than North's batting - replacing him with Clark.

Back on to the pitch development though... the rough is going to be mean in the last couple of days leading to some short innings. If we can get a good first innings lead, we have that variety of spinners available to attack the rough for left- and right-handers. However, so do England, which is why if we get a good lead we should be a good chance. Ponting and Katich have started us off well!

Well, we may have batted a little long yesterday (time, not runs - I was hoping for a bit more acceleration at the start of the day) and we may run out of time to dismiss the English/India/South Africa side, especially if it rains. Either way, it's a win! The England side have been completely demoralised, unless they sub out the whole team for the next few matches, there will still be that dejected mindset going around as was seen yesterday.

I love it how Paul Collingwood managed to turn the ball more than their two specialist spinners

Christ we got out of jail there, the tail wagged and made up for our disappointing batsmen. You blokes must be gutted, to have been so Superior and not won. Roll on Lords, we can`t play any worse. Only us Brits can get excited about getting a draw. Time for a deserved beer

Can some send a physio out on the field!! Cheats

Meh! We should've thrashed them but they batted like true Englishmen. Back foot defensive, front foot defensive, shouldering arms. All three of the shots that appear in the English batting textbook!

Beauty of the game ! Maybe a wake up call for both sides on what it takes to WIN games. No moral victory ever counts.

Yes, looking forward to Lords. :icon_cheers:

Heard Punter on the radio this morning - sounds a bit like sour grapes.

If you cant get the #10 and 11 'batsmen' out in 11 and a bit overs then there is something a tad impotent about your bowling attack me thinks.....

And i do realise the irony in describing Monty 'I am the new Phi Tufnell' Panasar as a batsmen

But the wash-up is we took 19 wickets, they took 6. The faces in the corwd were enough for me, nothing like a pom resigned to defeat - even if they didnt quite lose.

I did see one sign in the crowd - Only cowards pray for rain. Harsh, but fair.

yep, we didnt take the 20 wickets required so we cant really winge too much. We seem to have plenty of really good bowlers but no great bowlers. Should be a good series and we have definately got the momentum going in to the second test on Thursday. Great more 4 hours of sleep a night.

The show moves to Lord's tomorrow night, a venue where Australia have not lost a test match since 1896. Billed as the "home of cricket", it is practically a home game for Australia considering that record.

I hope Stuart Clark gets a run, he's done nothing wrong apart from being perhaps too old (with the selectors pushing for the future with youngens). Considering the performance of our team in the first test, we could manage with one extra bowler, and one less batsman. Bye bye Mr. Cricket, it's time. Over the last year, Mitchell Johnson has batted more consistently and with a higher average (haven't checked the stats but I wouldn't be surprised!) than him. Without our invincible line-up of yesteryears we can't afford to hold onto out-of-form dead weights. He needs to be dropped until he's back in form.

Thoughts?
