Hello fellow brewers
How long can I expect A brew to ferment at 16c still has a thick crust after 5day have not taken any reading yet used a us05 yeast
Start gravity was 1050 brewing First go at temp controled brewing

The hydrometer is the only thing that can tell you when fermentation is finished.

But as a guide, if I were brewing I'd leave it for 10-14 days, which may be longer than necessary but it helps the clarity anyway.

US05 tends to rip thru a brew fairly quickly.

But a steady gravity reading over 2-3 days means it will be ready!

At 16 degrees with an Ale, I would've thought 8 days-ish. :icon_cheers:

It does, but after 7 days take a small sample through the tap into a small container (pet bottle cap) and sniff. If it smells sweet/honeyish or like butterscotch then lock it up for a a further week for the yeast to clean up (diacetyl).

Screwy
