Hi everyone,

I am helping a friend find a decent burner for his brewing, and was wanting to get some information and advice.

Does anyone know what MJ/hour or BTU/hour ratings the NASA burners are? Also, is there anywhere in Sydney these can be found?

Secondly, how do the NASA burners compare to the duckbill wok burners (http://www.auscrown.com/commdbbrn.php) or the mongolian burners (http://www.auscrown.com/commjetbrn.php)? Has anyone seen/used both of them? Any impressions? I am basically looking for a very powerful burner - cost is not an issue, and I would prefer to buy it in Sydney, but I am also open to interstate companies who will post it.

Thanks everyone!

Thomas.

NASA burners output (supposedly) 130,000btu/hr, which is about 180-190MJ/hr

Theres already a thread on where to get them in/delivered to Sydney: Nasa burners in Sydney

Not too sure about the duckbills but I've heard the Mongolians can be pretty sooty when turned down low (to keep a rolling boil).

Edit: The search function is your friend! Keep the keywords simple though, it's a bit retarded.

My NASA burner has paid for itself in time saved, it will bring 30 litres of wort to the boil in under 15mins when cranked up on high, some pepole say its a bit loud but i disagree. For those first 15mins when its cranked up it puts out a bit of noise but then you can turn it right down so its almost off and it will keep a nice rolling boil you wont even hear it! Its great. Apparently the mongolians put out too much soot, i havent used them. Theres PLENTY of discussion on this board ( i read through all of it before settling on the NASA ) about various burners, and the general consensus is that NASA is the best choice. But do a search and have a read through it for yourself theres lots of good info there about where to purchase burners etc...

Used a 3 ring for my first 17 brews, it was fine. Wanted an additional burner so bought a NASA, it's much faster and less soot on the kettle bottom, so I guess the energy is producing more heat/less soot so more efficient, I guess. The 3 ring is now used for direct heating my SS mash tun. Also I like the stand and adjustable reg which comes with the NASA from Grain & Grape.

Heat output from the nasa burners varies, depending on what regulator is connected to it. I ended up getting burnt (pun intended) when I bought my nasa burner, it seemed to take forever to get my wort onto the boil. I had a closer look at the reg and realised it was only a medium pressure regulator. I ended up buying a variable 15-60 psi regulator and it turned the nasa into a whole new beast (at an extra cost of $95) . So yeah, make sure you get a good high pressure regulator included with it.

Cheers :)

if you're in Sydney, pay a visit to Gameco on Parramatta Rd Silverwater. Whilst they don't sell NASA's, they specialise in gas burners & offer a good discount if you mention this forum & that you want the burner for homebrew. They advised me against the mongolians due to the soot factor already mentioned. I got a 2 ring High pressure burner, 2m hose & HP reg for $130. Very happy. It had no troubles with keeping 84l on a rolling boil on Saturday's ISB brewday (burner pic here )

As stated perviously, the search function will provide you with a wealth of reading on most brewing topics.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone!

I did a search but couldn't find what I was after, is there any recommended places where I can buy the high pressure (or variable that supports high pressure) regulators?

Thanks again!

As stated and also in the threads either Gameco, Auscrown, Globe Imports or Grain and grape will sort you out with a reg to suit. IMO you need at least 30psi, mine goes to 60psi.

Prices vary between each place, but generally buying the whole kit from one place works out around the same price and is easier, rather than trying to gather the cheapest pieces from 3 locations. What I mean is one place might have cheap burners but dear regs, the other might have cheap regs but dear burners.

Yikes Stoodoo, $95 for a hp reg. I think gameco had suitable ones for $16 or something. Did you end up with a CIGWELD one?

Thanks Justin,

So is there some rule as to which regulator I should get for which burner?
For example, would I need a different regulator if I was to get a 120mj/hr mongolian burner than if I were to buy a 130000btu NASA burner, or a 80mj wok burner?

Cheers,
Thomas.

Just talk to the guys at the burner place, they'll line you up with the correct regulator and hose to suit. FWIW you don't need any particularly special hose (eg. stainless braid etc) as most of the hoses at a BBQ shop will work (they are generally orange) and are rated to 2.6MPa, just be aware there are some low pressure hoses. If it has 2.6Mpa on it you'll be fine. Roughly the whole set up will cost you around $130 whichever way you look at it so as stated best just to get the lot in one go.

As a general rule, if the reg went to 60psi I don't think it would hamper any of the burners we use. I can blow my NASA out at a full 60psi and I get a bit scared-because if it goes out you suddenly have a lot of flammable gas escaping at a great rate of knots. FWIW I think my burner is actually less efficient when it is absolutely maxing out so I rarely run it at full tilt. There is only so much heat you can drive into a pot, the rest escapes as radiant heat. If we were talking about an immersed electric element then that would be different but gas burners waste quite a bit of energy, but if it's a cold brewing day there is nothing better than gathering around the NASA to warm the hands, smell the hot malt and hops and watch the pot boil :rolleye:

Speaking of suitable burners.

I wonder how long before we see something like this over here.
