I am about to add a sight to my new hlt I am making.

I was thinking of just using
barbelbow.JPG
and some silicon hose with hose clamps.

Can I do this or do I need polycarbonate tubing?

Youngy

hi Youngy i have seen people do a sight gauge like that but you need to put 2 of those fittings on your vessel .
one is on the top to hold it into place the silicon hose will collapse without it
cheers paul

Also need to keep in mind cleaning following draining of wort?

Maybe a funnel to be able to flush boiling water through after?

Just my 2 cents

Good luck with it - look forward to seeing some pics...

1/2" and 3/8" Polycarbonate has been great for me. Remained clear, no fogging or cracking. It's good stuff.

I dont use a sight glass on my kettle though, only my HLT (but that has boiled other stuff before ;) ). In my kettle I just use a dip stick which is simple and effective and doesn't require drilling another hole in your vessel. If mounting a sight glass on your kettle just watch your burner doesn't cook the tube (with liquid in it should be fine), and dont mount your sight glass over a hole where the burning gasses will vent.

I used some plastic push in fitting (http://www.legris.com/Legris_ecom/RechercherReferencesTypeArticle.do?codeActivite=BP&codeGroupe=02&codeFamille=01&codeSousFamille=01&codeTypeArticle=3199&codeFiliale=australia&codeLangue=en_GB) to connect the tube and it has worked great, but this wasn't on a gas fired vessel. Otherwise you could use a simple compression fitting and maybe switch the olive out with a suitable oring so you get an easy, tight seal that is removable and wont crack your tube.

Have fun. Justin

3/8" polycarbonate tube from Specialised Wholesale in Newcastle.
I was lucky enough to get a 1m length cut but I've heard others having to buy a whole length (3m?).
Cheap enough not to break the bank though.

For a no-weld option try using an elbow as per youngy's post above with 2 flange nuts and silicon washers.
Cut the barbs back to one barb and heatfit (melt) the tube over. You can leave the barbs on of you want but in my HLT that represents 3 litres at the bottom the scale I would rather see. It helps if you heat the fitting too or it will cool the tube and crack it when forced on.
If you get it right you won't need anything (high temp silicone) to seal it either. :chug:

I did mine like this and just used a cable tie to secure it at the top
