Was watching some youtube clips and noticed that some people in the US are brewing in 200L drums. I was always told that we could only use s/s vessels. Please advise

As far as I know you can actually get s/s 44's....

If you can - that vid. looks like them to me.

Others will know better.

2c.

I had a quick look at those clips. Im no expert, but they do look like stainless steel drums to me.

Someone on here a while ago was selling 200L stainless drums that had been used for transporting ethanol IIRC...

sap.

you can definately get SS 44s. A few years ago i went through a factory that made SS 44 gal drums and SS 60 litre drums... if only i knew then what i know now.

I've seen 200L (44) s/s drums for sale on ebay (for about 500 from what i remember) they were used to transport wine.

Message them or call and they will give you a price! BUT it goes like this...

Think of what you would/should pay, double it and then when they tell you the price you will find it is double that again! Great dreamers site tho huh! :)

+1. That site has very few bargains and plenty of steep prices, but you might find something. I have posted my quoted prices below from it a few times on other threads, but here they are again from November 09 so you can be aware that there's quite a variance in what you're looking at on price. The only way to find out is to email and ask:

Stainless Steel Vat , 150 ltr capacity, 490mm dia x 810mm deep, open top. PRICE: $275.00 + GST

Stainless Steel Vat 80 Ltr capacity, 450mm dia x 540mm deep, open top, radius corners, wearband and handles. PRICE: $350.00 + GST

Stainless Steel Vat 200 Ltr capacity, 570mm dia x 780mm deep, open top, radius corners, wearband. PRICE: $450.00 + GST

Stainless Steel Vat 80 Ltr capacity, 550mm dia x 360mm deep, open top with 2 x handles. PRICE:$ 175.00 + GST

The quoted shipping interstate was quite high, so if you do go via this site I would recommend splitting a pallet with one of more people to make a saving there.

Also realise that some of these 'vats', particularly if they're milk pails or milk vats and not drums, are thick and will take time to heat up as a result with an external burner (and are also heavy) so be careful on choosing without inspecting them or asking carefully about thickness first. If you're heating with an element you would have less to worry about though.

For more info on Stainless Drums, here's a related thread where there is some discussion on trying to get the right grade of steel suitable for brewing. According to comments, 304 or 305 food grade stainless is desirable, but 301 will also work:
