Hi Guys,

About to put on my next pale ale and was thinking of using a mix of Pride of Ringwood for the bittering and Galaxy for the finishing.

Has anyone used this combination? If so what were the results like?

I believe kosciusko pale ale use that combo. It's a nice enough beer.

Yep, that's the combo in my house beer. Gotten good reviews from mega swillers and craft beer drinkers alike. I also re culture Coopers yeast to use in it and think it's definitely worth the effort. Used S04 once when I couldn't have been bothered re culturing and it wasn't the same.

I believe that Cascade Premium Lager, that uses POR as the base hop, is about to switch from Hersbrucker to Galaxy for the aroma hop.

I found this article

TASMANIAN brewer Cascade has changed the recipe of its flagship Premium Lager to make it more appealing to top-shelf drinkers, but the new recipe has resulted in a cut in alcohol content from 5 per cent to 4.5 per cent.

Craig MacLean, general manager of craft beer at parent company CUB, said the new recipe, which swaps imported Hersbrucker hops for Tasmanian-grown summer hops, reflected the fact that tastes had changed since the beer was first launched in 1985. Customers now preferred an easier-drinking style with a less bitter aftertaste.
The cut in alcohol content was not deliberate, he said, with brewers trying a number of different alcohol levels before deciding the 4.5 per cent brew tasted the best.
“In order for us to get a more balanced beer, it tasted best at 4.5 per cent,” he said.
Mr MacLean said the company was not concerned about repeating CUB's disastrous 2007 decision to cut the alcohol content of its best-selling Victoria Bitter from 4.9 per cent to 4.6 per cent in order to save on excise, only for drinkers to desert the watered-down brew in droves.
“VB was a financial decision, but this is about improving the beer itself,” he said.
CUB last year restored VB to full strength, resulting in a surge in sales that has restored its position as Australia's best-selling beer - a position it lost briefly to XXXX Gold, brewed by CUB's biggest rival, Lion.

Could the summer hops be galaxy? Also pretty funny that cascade premium doesn't have any cascade in it.... I also find it hard to believe that dropping the % wasn't a price thing should have been easy to balance at 5% add a bit more hops!

'Summer' is a variety of hops.
WTF does that mean??

Perle is a variety of hop.. so is Cascade.. so is Centennial.. so is Citra.. so is all manner of other names... good god damn...

In answer to OP.. I used to use a Coopers Pale as a base which has a 'mild' splattering of POR as a bittering and loved a bit of Galaxy as a dry hop / small boil addition, made a great summer session beer, (been a while since Ive done one of those though) I guess it really depends on what your tastes are but no reason at all that combo doesnt work.. personally, I like galaxy as a 'component' and companion to other hops, specifically piny types like Chinook and Centennial, even with Simcoe (but only a dash)

On its own, I rekon it can be a little dominating and I find a little is better than a lot.

Mate that sounds off the hook. I'm gonna do that.

Sorry yob I think he was responding to me. I was thinking when cascade said they used a tasmania summer hops, I thought it might be a type of hop they grew in summer. :p I didn't realise there was a type of hop called summer...

Yeah, there's the bit of text I was referring to. Yob can be a bit illiterate sometimes, probably when he's had a few.

Cascade beer has been around for a long time.I reckon the name refers to the waterfall not the hop.

I think its the name of the brewery. They may have named it after a waterfall or something like that. It could be the name of the creek they took their water from for their beer.
