See Getaway have a story on Prague tonight.
Pity David Raine isn't the reporter as he always seems to get a pub and a few beers into the story. Brendon Julian is the reporter, so hopefully he'll at least touch on the beer aspect.

Beers,

Doc,

I knew I was in beer heaven in Prague when I saw a little kiosk at the Railway station that sold newspapers and beer. :)

Well that was a bit of a let down from a beer and brewing point of view.
Looks like a great city, but I'm still none the wiser on where to get a good beer in an exceptional setting.

Damn missed it, we're going to Europe in mid August and intend to take the train to Prague, Ceske Budejovice and Pilsen. Though from the lonely planet guides it appears you have to be on your toes.

Edit any tips from previous travellers to Czech Rep most welcome

Prague has been on my to-see list since before I knew that Pilsn was the place Pilsner was from. Was an avid Kafka reader in my teens.

I was disappointed when I heard the show's windup tonight and realised I'd missed it while putting the little monsters to bed.

Well you really didn't miss anything beer related. One of the best guides to travelling in Europe or anywhere really is Roger Prost's Encyclopedia of beer. I mapped out my last trip to Praha using this book. It has a great guide to brew pubs around the globe.
Try these places if you get a chance

U Fkeku 11 Kremencova New Town

U Kalicha, Na bojisti 12, Nove Mesto Praha

U Cerneho Vola, Loretanske namesti1,Hradcany, Praha

U Zlateho Tygra 17 Husova

You have to remember that these places are surrounded by cobblestone streets. When you pass out there really insn't much give in cobblestones. Nowhere near as soft as the pillow-like bitumen we grew up, passing out on.

cheers

Thanks Gerald, I'd love to base my trip on Roger Prost's Encyclopedia of beer, he is great writer.
We have to go to a wedding in Ireland/Northern Ireland (Wedding in Ireland, reception in Derry, must remember not to say Londonderry). Then Belguim, opps is that the Brussels Beer Festival at the Grande Palace, a few weeks of, whats this town, oh it's Hoegaarden wonder what's in this town. After visiting lovely monestries where they make cheese and oh look more beer, we plan to get a train to Prague or Praha via Dusseldoff and hopefully Munich. Before Ireland and after Czech Rep it's London and surrounds, it's that Fullers Brewery. Hope to catch up with Kook. It's not a beer tour, no nothing like that, as that would not be fair.

I like your thinking. Great minds think alike. Sounds like a great trip.

tell me if this is off-topic, but...

one of my workmates went to Pilzn, and marvelled that the food he was eating cost 50c, and the beer cost 50c, and then he remembers being escorted to the city limits by the fine Czech constabulary.

it sounded better when he told it. honest...

May well be a repeat performance, though being escorted to the city limits maybe a hard act to follow.

Bloody coblestones, we were hoping to cycle around in some sort of alcoholic Pilsen/Primator/Budvar/what ever we're never heard of before hase. Taken note of the warning from Gerald and the warning we've read that cycling is not fun on coblestones. Reminds me of the band S.O.D and their classic album "Speak English Or Die", bloody coblestones. Now this has got to be off topic. Must be sleepy bo bo time. :chug:

Edit: for those of you that don't who Storm Troopers Of Death (SOD) are, please note the the song "Speak English Or Die" and same named album is a piss take.

Hey Nonic,

Watch out when riding on those cobblestones mate. When I was there a few years ago my now wife slipped on them there cobblestones after a few Budvars and broke her elbow  And we were only walking! Nothing like getting to know a city via the inside of it hospitals... It shows how good the beer was that it still rates as a highlight of the trip. Well, for me at least :p

Envious,

Shawn.

I have that particular S.O.D. T-shirt.

Can't wear it anywhere coz people have no sense of humour.

I still occasionally wear other provocative shirts, though.

workmate went to prague 15mths ago to visit family / friends. he reckoned all the bars in the main st etc were for americans & beers were $5 or so. spend 10 mins walking thru narrow laneways to where the locals are & not only is the food better but beers cheaper (50c) & authentic.

cheers

Hey Shawn that wasn't going up that hill to Kafka's house was it? Our wives must wear the same shoes.

If anybody goes to Prague don't miss the tour of the Staropramen Brewery. It's located in Prague 5. Short stagger on the tram. The tour gets you a free pint from the lagering tanks. :chug: :chug:

Small world eh! Maybe they were the same shoes...

It was heading back to our flat just off Wenceslas (apologies for the spelling!) square. It was in winter and the central heating failed! She spent the next six weeks in a cast, but that didn't stop us!

Did I mention the beer was great :D

Shawn.

Wes summed it up pretty well with his post. The beers over there are being slowly, sowly emasculated. :(

SAB now owns PU and are basically determined to make it a supermarket shelf, world brand.

Don't be surprised if PU becomes the VB of the Czech Republic.

My wife's relatives who live just outside Plzen have told me that the bittering hops aren't even from the CR anymore. They're sourced from somewhere else in Europe. IIRC correctly from France.

Bringing down the iron curtain unfortunately has made the Czech Republic easy pickings for multi-nationals.

Wonder if they've got a Starbucks yet? <_<
