Hey all,

I'm just wondering if anyone out there is a plasterer or has a mate whom is one that can repair my ceiling????

As a fellow brewer I am sure you understand how one likes to sort small challenges without forking out a lot of $$$, well my new telephone cable is about to be one expensive such challenge. I put a foot wrong (tripping on a bloody earth wire) and cracked the ceiling (original early 1900's) which has subsequently resulted in a section falling down (approx 50cm x 50cm).

Anyway, the short of it is I need it fixed - ASAP - as the Mrs is spewing about the look, dust & fact the a piece fell out tonight was while she was sleeping!!!

It will need a new piece cut in, fixed and plastered. I can sand and paint. Am happy to pay cash, but it must be a good, professional grade job as we are only renting. Being a student I was hoping to save some money over the commercial guys that view it as a small job and charge accordingly...

FYI I have had one quote that was "up to $200 depending on how long it takes".

If anyone can help or point me in the right direction I'll be most grateful!

Cheers,

TKF

PS : I can supply photos tomorrow if required...

I'm about to attempt some plastering myself (but on modern plasterboard). It doesn't look too hard according to this website.

However, with yours being a rental it's probably best to get a professional in to do it rather than learning as you go...

If the house is early 1900's I seriously doubt its plasterboard unless its had a renovation.

Whats the ceiling look like? Are there timber battens forming squares on, the underside of the ceiling? Or have the ceilings been replaced with plasterglass with lagging over the ceiling joists? If so you will need someone who specialises with plasterglass as it has a nice smooth finish quite different to plasterboard.

If its still that fibrous plaster shit held up by lagging that they use to use, good luck trying to repair it.

As much as i would like to give It a go myself I simply don't have time, and It isnt my place.

The company who quoted said It was original, and the house is def early 1900s.
there does appear to be another layer behind the ceiling that could be battens?

The ceiling doesn't look like any glass type product to me but I honestly have no clue... sorry I can't give more detailed info...

What's lagging & how does it appear?

Thanks!

! i would pay the $200 man.
One of my best friends is a plasterer and a good one is well worth the money . just get a few more quotes but going rate is at least $80/hour without materials so two hunj is probly not far off :icon_chickcheers:

Yeah 200 dollars is pretty good. Sounds like it is a Lathe and plaster job which is common for the time, lots of battens nailed close together with a white set applied. If it was the early types of prefab plaster boards there would be decorative battens forming squares on the ceiling, as the early pre-fab boards were pretty small. Lathe and plaster shouldn't be two hard to fix, if you can find a hard-wall plasterer who does ceiling skim coating (ie. skim coating suspended slab soffits). IF you can take a picture I will be able to tell you for sure!

does it look like this?
