i just use a perm marker on the side of my 19lt s/s bottle with date and style or batch name.

Another good tip: Kids LOVE stickers!! I print the labels, (2 min job) and my 4 year old son puts them on. Best part is he thinks it's a treat for being well behaved :)

Can i borrow your kid next time im bottling?

I love it, exploitation of children in the beer making process....

Guysmiley you are a legend.

Im having the same problem, i usually use gold crown seals which i can write on top but these lids are pretty pricey and by writing on them you can only use them once. For now i am using hand written labels, getting over it though and lost track last week.

are you recycling crown seal tops ? whats a seal cost something like 5 cents or $1.20 a carton of stubbies

$1.50 for a packet of 100 at Woolworths is Pricey? .

You can cut very fine lettering or symbols into a soft white eraser using a craft scapel available from all art and craft shops and some newsagents. To save time, you could use symbols, and have a sheet of paper on the fridge with the symbol next to its description. I havent tried it on crown seals, but an ink pad should work. Other options are dismantling a marker and using the end of the wick as an ink pad or heating up and blowing out an old ball point pen.

You may want to wash the grease off and sterilise the scapel beforehand in a flame, and if you cut yourself, run it under cold water for 5 minutes holding the cut together, then dry and squeeze out some blood and air dry with breath to seal the wound.

That the best method I can think of.

Edit: I think metho on a rag will remove the ink

why not use the blood for the stamper. though might stop people drinking your beer - that could be a good thing.

You could just write on the bottles with a permanent marker, when it comes time to re-use the bottle, just write over the permanent marker with a whiteboard marker. Then wipe the whiteboard ink off with a tissue.

Or Dougsbrew's metho method works well (much better than his centrepunch method).

Youre not likely to cut youself unless your drunk - thus the warning for AHBeers. Cutting youself with a greasy blade sux.

I etch the glass and only use the bottles once.

snip

What do you etch the glass with and how? Hydrofluoric acid? Damn thats dangerous!

I have a book in which I write all my beer styles, recipes, and notes etc. Each brew has a number allocated. The number is then marked on the bottle caps. If I pick up a bottle with number 27 on the cap I just go to the book, flick through to number 27 and there is the recipe, notes, and dates of the brew.
Exactly this. And I don't re-use pet bottle caps.

texta & electrical tape, comes in flash colors, doesn't come off accidentally, but doesn't leave any residue behind when you remove it.

I used to do exactly this.....My little one was VERY pleased when I started kegging and she got given all my old boxes of stickers...

I was referring to buying new PET lids.

No, i throw crown seals out, i was talking about PET lids.

Kids and labelling - good idea, but after having a bottle explode next to me - one of the very batch I was labelling - I'll be leaving my kids out of the equation.

Note: That was the only bottle that blew from that batch, but still...

Can bottles explode so quickly after carbing? Or did you label a few days later?

Maybe you damaged the bottle in the capping process.....
