Nice JJ - no excuses for not brewing now :)

cheers Ross

JJ is it one of those with a sight gauge ?

Pumpy :)

yes, it has a sight gauge. I am a little concerned however. I got this bad boy going in the kitchen to see how long in would take to bring 35 litres of water to 78 degrees. The double power point got real hot and I smelt some plastic burning I unplugged the phone and saw that it had made the plastic melt  Maybe this sucka needs its own stand alone Ppoint. Has anyone else experienced this??? It is 240 v 10 amp.

Cheers, JJ

I've never actually checked the heat at the powerpoint but I'd be a little concerned as well. Mine's certainly never melted any plastic. I should be brewing Friday so I'll try to remember to check and report back.
I have a good old trustworthy Fowlers Vacola. I don't know specifically how long it takes but I start it heating for the sparge when I've started the mash and it's up to temperature well before the end of the mash.

I'm not an electrician but,...I can run two 2400W 20 lt Birko urns out of the same double power point no problem (not a powerboard or double adaptor). Our place is 9 years old so the electrics are fairly modern, could be your power point can only handle 2400W max from the two points combined?

Cheers, Andrew.

I think the phone is the thing that stuffed it up. One of the prongs on the adaptor is faulty and probably overheated the outlet. Thanx for the replies, I think i am being paranoid as i would hate to burn the house down!!

Most household power circuits are protected by a 16A fuse or circuit breaker so there is no problem there, as you say it may come down to the condition of the power point itself.

Hi JJ,

Im thinking of getting the 40L Crown Urn too.

Do you know if the tap dispenser is threaded (on the inner side or otherwise) to accomodate attachments?

Im wanting to a screw a hosetail onto it so that I can run an 8mm hose to my sparge arm.

Cheers.

Certainly is :icon_cheers:
It looks like a 1/2 inch male thread socket

Cheers,

JJ

Take out the fitting and make your own "weldless" fitting the same as you would for a kettle conversion

If the tap dispenser is already threaded, wouldnt it be easier to screw on a hosetail?

I don't believe they are threaded thats all, plus if you are fly sparging the taps on the urns are either on or off and hard to regulate

Can't vouch for the Crown in particular but my 40lt Birko had a very similar tap assy which didn't screw into any socket but was effectively a weldless fitting. like AusDB suggested I just tossed it to one side and went the weldless option with a 1/2" ball valve.
Cheers

I have a 40 litre urn and have never had the issue of overheating at the power point (mine is about 10 years old). I would be real careful and check the urn at a single power point before you leave it unattended for any period of time.

Good luck you won't regret having the urn, it speeds thing up

I better double check whether or not the taps threaded before departing with the dough then.

How could I go about fitting a weldless ball valve?

Does anyone have a photo of a re-fitted urn they can post?

Cheers
