My Hops Have Grown (nine Inches Today )

Frank and Kabooby gave me some hops rhizomes and I put them in pots hoping they would be Ok after three weeks so far so good any tips ?

The one on the left is 'Vienna Gold' which i never heard of but seen other brewers with it.

The one on the right is Columbus .

I am hoping they will have some aroma but in their first year they may be just for decoration .

I water them every day and once a week with 'Thrive'

Pumpy - No need to over feed them, let those weeds grow!

I water mine every 2 or so days, maybe a little more in the heat. My Chinook grew half a foot in a day during the early heat wave we had here, its now above the trellis top - need to trim it down me think.

Basicly just let them do their thing.

Next season get them into bigger pots again, or into the ground.

I would be tempted to cut the end off the leading bine (once it has grown as far as you want it to), put that into a pot as a cutting - then this should encourage the rhizome to shoot out more bines... just a thought though.

My Columbus is also the star of the show, the rest are just trying to keep up. I still have mine in tree bags (second year) but next year they will find a good home in the earth.

they are first year rhizomes i planted them in a mix of potting mix and cow poo and give them seasol once a month or so.

I wish mine were doing that well. Mine only get watered when it rains and when I manage to make the drive up the hill with a cube full of water and a watering can. So far the kangaroos have left them alone.

I have five varieties and its amazing how different they look.Last year I could not see any difference in thier form.What a change in one year.They are now so nice and green and vigorous.I use seasol once every two weeks and bore water every second day.

I have great hopes of flowers this season, I was not expecting any last season - they were first year cuttings that still grew 3m high.

I have since planted the best performers into the ground, and they are going strong.

If they are in the ground, chances of flowers are significantly increased from what I understand.

I would wager your hops should flower, as they have significant growth well before Christmas.

(Plus it helps for sure to annoy SWMBO! :icon_cheers: )

We can't get Columbus here in the USA because it's still protected by patent. Tomahawk, just like it, is patented also.

But Zeus is supposedly the same thing also, and not patented, and I will probably be getting some of that in our next spring from a fellow hop grower in our Grow-Hops Yahoo group.

Yeah my Hallertau have gone beserk and are growing upwards of 6' per day. In a few weeks the lead tendril is over 2m (6 feet) and climbing; the trellis it's on will let it go to 20 feet if I want 'cause its the lattice wall of a verandah.

BUT the Hersbruker is sitting and sulking. It's only grown about 6" into a little shrub and won't take off (yet) <_<

Any thoughts. :unsure:

I've mulched heavily about the base (keeping a small clear space) hit them both with a modest amount of blood and bone and a handfull of Single Super and kept up the water as they face North in good all day sunlight,.
