Big ups for TPG also, I wish they would hurry up and upgrade their DSLAM out here to ADSL2+.

No problems here from TPG except no ADSL2 in the exchange. The off peak is between 04:00 am - 09:00 not very useful but I can easily get the full download by scheduling torrents for off peak.

The biggest problem with all of them is you have to keep checking around every few months as they keep changing plans but never inform customers when better deals come out.

If you need a big download allowance per month look at Exetel for a no frills cheap broadband provider.

Internode Easy Broadband.

http://www.internode.on.net/news/2009/10/153.php

$49.95 for 50 gig. Just increased today due to their new cable via Guam to the US, used to be 30 gig.

It does count uploads (just like testra and Optus) But they have a premium usenet, so no more BT for me. All d/l are at full speed.

Been naked :icon_chickcheers: with iinet for almost 2 years now. Free (voip) landline calls anywhere in Aus. 13 numbers are 30c untimed which can be handy considering how long some companies keep you on hold. A quick break down (for 1yr 10 mths) national calls 1610 mins 0.00 /international calls 16 mins $1 / mobile calls 82 mins $25 / local calls(includes many 13#) 3412 mins $28. A total of $54 with no line rental charges. Download limit not to bad, 15GB on peak (12pm-2am) 20GB off, if you go over they slow your speeds rather than charge $$$ like some of the others. If available think it's worth checking out, that new BOB modem thing they're currently spruiking sounds pretty good too. A site that might really help is Here.
Good luck.

hehe.
Cheers all and thanks Franko.

I had a look at my ISP's smallprint and it states "Superfast broadband speed but it may vary depending of what is being downloaded".
The Pc where it state what speed it is at says 400Mbps not 256kbps as opening post stated.
But it can slow down considerably. I turned of the modem during the thunderstorms and reset the modem and it seem to have gone back to normal for time being.

On my laptop wire less the speed is 56 Mbps ATM.

But now the e-mail has gone down and when I contacted Optus they said there is a widespread problem with the email server. !@$% you cannot win. :(

Well I 've got to look at the bright side of things.

Cat's away and the 3 little Tigers too.

Time to clean out the fermenters and Gear and brew something quick up.
Probably only a Partial APA of some sort.

TPG here for 6 years and and no major complaints, only ADSL1 though :( which sux ass as the exchange is ADSL2 enabled but TPG dont have any ports, Tel$ra and some of their resellers can offer them though <_<

Every year when our contract expires I shop around for the most economical deal for us plus a VOIP plan and ended up staying with the 25Gb/8000kb for $79.99 through TPG and a $200 prepaid VOIP plan through MyNetPhone which gives us 100 National calls and 100 mins mobile per month over 12 months. We were on Engin previously which wasn't too bad but their service wasn't fantastic, a lot of echoing and static down the line.

Check out the Whirlpool Forums for advice also.

Cheers

Actually Optus are the ones with the cheap and nasty DSLAM's, I believe iiNet use the good ones (Ericsson)

Correct, optus use huaweii. singtel/optus will take whatever equipment has the lowest price tag regardless of how well it integrates into their existing network...

I am with TPG even though I work for another ISP. Go to http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/ and try and sus out a plan there. Probably best to go with someone who actually owns the gear in your local exchange - less finger pointing that way...

Cheers

No complaints with TPG. Fast, reliable, cheap.

Correction: Just worked up my first complaint about TPG. I needed to recover a password for a dis-used email address. Dude on the phone decided the best way to resolve the issue would be to reset the password. Fair enough you say? Yeah so did I. Until I worked out he changed the password for my entire connection, not the email address. Incidentally, I still can't get into the email.

Well, i use Exetel at the moment but only really because they have good ADSL1 plans and that is all that is here in the exchange... I use or have used a few different places

Internode - great service and always good download speeds even in Tassie when i was on only one of the 2 ADSL2+ enabled exchanges. A bit more $$$ than some but worth it IMO if you can get the ADSL2+ service.
iiNet - OK but value has really dropped off with plans lately, seem to be targeting the mainstream rather than technical users nowadays, which probably changes the support nature somewhat. I had an old 512kbit connection ranging to a 20Mbit ADSL2+ connection at work and they were all quite good though.
Exetel - good from what i can tell, haven't had to call their support however, but they are cheap and offer good value. 60GB offpeak download on most plans which is from 2am to 12 noon, not that bad. They don't shape after hitting the limits on their plans (unless you ask them) and just charge $3 per GB. If i could get ADSL2+ with them they use the Optus network but i can't so i use ADSL1 at 8Mbps. They give free VOIP calls, SMS and offer a fax-to-email and email-to-fax service which i use pretty consistently.
Optus - had cable back in the day when that is what you needed to get decent broadband, way before any of these 3GB limits and stuff applied, it was possible to download upwards of 30GB per month for $75 a month or so. Unheard of in 2001. Nowadays they offer very poor value on their broadband plans along with long contracts and very expensive overuse charges.
Virgin - i use the 3G product for laptop "wireless warrior" use which works fine in the areas i use it in which is usually Sydney or Melbourne metro. 5GB a month for $34. I wouldn't use it as a home connection, but it does generally work 80% of the way down the trainline from Hazelbrook to Sydney which has to count for something.

Of course your mileage may vary wildly with any provider, my advice is fine a plan with enough downloads per month, enough speed (1.5Mbits is a bare minimum i reckon) and fits the budget, then make sure whatever it is doesn't have a ******* contract (longer than 6 months or requiring >$150 termination fee), and of course order online rather than talking to someone or being convinced by door to door salesmen. My mother and father in law have this absurdly crap broadband plan with massive overuse charges and a terrible contract and consistently have to ring them to fix things on their bill. I keep telling them that they could get 60-70GB on a ADSL2+ plan for the same price and get rid of their contract however it is like pulling teeth trying to explain it to them as they have been told "the cable service that XX offers is the fastest available"

I use Locall Australis. I get ADSL2 (Only 7.5mbps right now) and I get 70gb for $85

Shite 256kbps DoDo unlimited plan. Could not afford what the big T asked for ADSL at higher speeds.

Living in a semi rural area does not give you enough options.

Only downside is the reported not so good technical support. Having said that I've never had troubles with their tech support.

Just thought I'd reply to this after this email came through - might be of interest to any one looking for a new isp (no affiliation just a very satisfied long term customer):

I'm using Exetel ADSL2,

$65 including line rental, for 25GB peak and 60GB off peak (midnight to midday)
$1.50 per GB excess.
VOIP, SMS and fax2email.
I can only get about 8.5mb connection speed due to the distance from the exchange.

I currently have wireless with 3, $39 per month for 6gig. More than enough for general browsing and the occasional download.

Wouldn't be using it for torrents however.

after being with telstra for 12 years i too am also on the 3 $39 dollar plan. i get good download speeds and it works a treat.

i do download torrents with no problems at all. all you do is set the alarm when you cap is close and then you just settle down. i dont download a great deal but when i do its great.

TPG revised prices ADSL2+ plan $50.00 for 50Gb + 50Gb off peak.

not too bad except off peak is 4.00am to 09.00am.

Shite 256kbps DoDo unlimited plan. Could not afford what the big T asked for ADSL at higher speeds.

Satellite broadband here. Thanks to Telstra and their antiquated pair-gain system i managed to get a subsidy to get it installed for nix.

Just upped to the 1Mb plan this morning which is automatically increased to a max of 4Mb (min is 1Mb). Checked out a few of the slower loading sites (anything ninemsn or telstra powered) and they are nice and quick now.

Only downside to satellite (other than the 1m dish on my roof) is the price of downloads.......

Seriouly WTF is with MSN and Telstra sites.
I mean they are some of the biggest companies with the most amount of money to spent on their sites - but both have hard to navigate sites that are slow as.
I was trying to find some information on M$ products the other week and I gave up in the end the site was so hard to navigate and was so slow. As for telstra - dont get me started on those pricks.

Just caught this thread and thought I'd add my 2c in case anyone was interested.

We were with AAPT for a number of years. They kept changing their prices without telling us, their service dropped out regularly during peak times, they moved their call centre to India or someplace and replaced their operators with non-tech script reading robots with no brain and no understanding of English. They changed my account number for some reason then screwed up my bills and overcharged me. We had a tech problem and they took 1 week to get Telstra out there and didn't fix the problem then tried to charge me for the call-out, even though the problem was off my property (Telstra cable had rotted from water damage and from some gel they put in their lines in the 80s which is now proven to destroy phone lines  ). They don't answer e-mails, you have to wait 15-30 mins on hold for tech support. I was advised by a computer engineer friend that AAPT are too big for their bandwidth and have too many customers, so their service gets overcrowded and that's why comnnections drop out all the time. I could go on. Needless to say, I would advise anybody they stay well the hell away from AAPT.

Recently (2 weeks) changed over to Internode. Great people to deal with - very friendly. Everyone you speak with in Tech support is a computer engineer in Australia. Service has not dropped out once, speeds are super fast. I reckon good for the price (ADSL 2+ with 20GB for $49). Lots of people in the industry recommend these guys. I even know a senior Telstra employee who could have Telstra broadband for free who ditched them and went with Internode!

Cheers - Snow.

iinet here too. Always very helpful. Only drama is they don't have ADSL2 or 2+ DSLAMS in our exchange (although Telstra does :( )

We are happy with TPG for the past two years. 40GB from 9am to 3am, 110GB from 3am to 9am. Great for scheduling the download of shitty movies in the twilight times, and plenty of bandwidth allowance for day-to-day surfing. Even better, if we blow the allowance in peak time, it kicks back to low-speed, but we will never be charged extra........ a big +1 as far as I'm concerned.

Their call-centre is frustrating though. Fortunately we rarely need to call them. That in itself is a plus.
