If we dont stop this it will happen. I personally am disgusted that a politician can sponsor such a fascist piece of legislation.
Cheers Altstart

Dear friend,

Imagine a government proposing an internet censorship system that went further than any other democracy - one that made the internet up to 87% slower, more expensive, accidentally blocked up to one in 12 legitimate sites, and missed the vast majority of inappropriate content.

This is not China, Saudi Arabia or Iran - this is the vision of Senator Stephen Conroy for Australia. Testing has already begun. The community must now move to stop this plan. Click here to save the net:

The system that Senator Conroy wants is a mandatory filter of all internet traffic, with the government of the day able to add any unwanted site to a secret blacklist. Already, the wrangling has begun for the inclusion of material relating to anorexia, euthanasia and gambling. It isn't difficult to see the scheme is open to abuse.

Even when it comes to preventing child p-rnography, the filter will not prevent peer-to-peer sharing and is very simple to sidestep. The protection of our children is vitally important - that's why we can't afford to waste funds on this deeply flawed system. We should be concentrating on solutions that are more effective and won't undermine our digital economy or our democratic freedoms.

This must rank as one of the most ill-thought decisions of the Rudd Government's first year in power. We need to act now to tell big brother the mandatory internet filter is incompatible with the principles of a modern democracy and modern economy:

Our government should be doing all in its power to take Australia into the 21st century economy, and to protect our children. This proposed internet censorship does neither. Take action to save the net today.

Thanks for being a part of the solution,
The GetUp team

PS - The proposed scheme will pass all internet traffic through a government filter - it's like asking Australia Post to filter every letter sent in Australia. Click here to save the net.

Good find there Altstart. Voted with my keyboard.

Relax. It's never going to get off the ground. No way. Now how.

Getup are one of the most effective government lobbying bodies Australia has ever seen.
I wish them well/

jaysus, Chappo... They'd have to put another bloke on just to monitor your posts alone... :p

Haha, it's like trying to stop underage drinking by curbing the sale of cheap, sugary RTDs.

It will never happen!

Judging from the amount of activity we've heard from the government over this, it looks like they're going to either quietly drop it or make it an option, making it essentially 'net nanny for ISPs'.

Added my support. Love those getup people - they are very effective.

perhaps getup could help out with a fair excise deal for microbreweries.

Getup seems a good outfit.

Doesn't matter who's in power. If the government proposes tramping on our freedoms they'll call 'em out for it.

In fact I'll raise a glass of home-brewed APA to them tonight (he types getting the thread vaguely on track.)

But as I say, I don't believe this will get anywhere. Nor should it.

Now if we could unwind all those Howard-era police-state laws...

Yeah, but have they actually changed government policy successfully?

Public opinion sways government policy, although a government would be unlikely to admit to a single group shutting down a policy directly. It stands to reason that unless people speak up about issues that they aren't happy with, things won't change. At the very least, getup raises issues to the consciousness of the Australian public, and every 3 years we vote how we feel.

They claim to have played a role on a lot of issues.

Campaigns

To what extent is a moot point. How do you measure it? Anyway, the squeaky hinge gets the oil. Make a big noise and you will be heard, if not heeded. Make no noise and you most definitely will be ignored.

guh this is so old now. This is the Family First anti pornography idea. The only reason this idea saw the light was because Rudd told the FF party he'd put it forward in exchange for FF giving preference to ALP, it will never actually happen.
