I have the new coopers home brew kit and there's brown gunk around the tap, it's not a screw in tap but has the rubber slip together type seals, I have a brew down in the kit now, the infection is external, what should I do? And do you think the brew will be ok?

Brown gunk doesn't tell us much. Is it from a previous brew or this one. Brown gunk could be yeast.
What does a sample of the beer in your hydrometer tube smell and taste like?

I think it could be from last brew, I noticed it when cleaning, I will taste today as I said its external so hopefully doesn't get into beer. I might try soaking it in steriliser. Which I did before making this beer..

External as in outside the fermenter? Those coopers push in taps can leak easy if you bump them. You may have bumped the tap or something and some beer snuck through. Your beer inside the fermenter should be fine.
