I need some help here....

I just took a hydro sample and its showing that i made wine not beer...the level is at the red section of the meter...

Just a thought, theres alot of sediment in it should this matter? (you know first couple of pours has lots of crap in it)

Any help would be good, thanks

An exact reading and maybe a list of ingredients/procedure will help us help you. On an initial read though, I would suggest you should take another reading (if you haven't pitched your yeast already) or you've made a brew that is potentially quite strong (12-14% - if the yeast holds up)

Cheers,

microbe

Hey Gumby,

I don't use one :D

Problem solved for me! But if you want real specs, get a refractometer.

Cheers,

InCider.

It was a coopers green cap tin and 1kg of sugar plus yeast...

taking another reading right now...

Much clearer reading this time, its still on the red, reading about .5% !?!? yeast has been pitched and brew is ready to be bottled...

Hi

As long as the beer SG is in the range, a wine hydrometer is fine. I have a few hydrometers (because I am a probrewer), some read to 1.050, another 1.100
Normally for homebrew, I use a hydrometer that can read 1.000 to 1.100 - within a point or two is fine for homebrew.

A good article on reading hydrometers is here

The sediment doesn't really matter too much unless it makes the hydrometer srick to the side of your measuring glass.

Cheers
Pedro
