Hi All
Heading up to the hunter valler this weekend and have heard that there is a brewery up there. ( cant be drinking wine all weekend :beerbang: ). Anybody been there? Is it worth a look? And where is in the Hunter Valley?

Hi beerslayer,

I went up there in september its about 2hrs nth of syd i put a discussion on here about it, do a search for "hunter valley breweries".

Its worth the drive, some nice beers to be had up there!

Cheers,
Hopsta

Thanks guys

Ill do a search. Any beers that were of special note that I should be trying?

Potters Kolsch is good and worth a try.

I still have a 1.5ltr magnum of it hanging around. I wonder how it will go with a bit of ageing.....

My folks live up there and I have done the rounds a few times checking out the beers that are on offer. I was a little disappointed with the Potters beers. They weren't "bad" but they were very commercial and frankly I found them pretty boring. Of course, Blue Tongue is not much better in that department. But definitely a breath of fresh air was the Blue Tongue seasonal ale that is available at Harrigans Pub (or at least it was when I was last there). Its an English pale ale style - not bad I thought.

Do the rounds though and try them all - it makes for a pretty good day out.

By the way, the bottle shop at Harrigan's Pub is VERY good - it has a huge selection of imported beers that are rarely seen in other bottlos. So if you are looking for a few takeaways then its a good place to check out. :)

the blue tounge ginger beer is terrible, ive had 5 left of a six pack in my fridge for months.just waiting for someone i dont like to come around to offload them :p
i think i heard some where that its beer with ginger flavour added not ginger beer.is that right?

mind you some of the blue tounge beers on tap at the brewery in newcastle are ok

I think that most of the blutongue beers are pretty much in the "premium lager" boat, but I hear that their seasonals are pretty good, including an IPA. Dunno whats available at this time of year but. I have heard off other brewer that the brewer at Potters brewery is really friendly and keen to have a chat about beer. When ya get to the hunter valley, most wineries ya visit have the tourist map thingies, and that will have Harrigans on there, and probably potters too. If yer looking for some good wine, Brokenwood has some really good ones, especially the ones that "arent for tasting" if you get a good person pouring for you.... Not affiliated, just had a mate that used to work there. Also, the small winemakers centre and the boutique wine centre have some really good drops
All the best

I tried the Potters Kolsch on tap recently when they were showing it off at the Australian Pub beer festival - I thought it was excellent. So much so that I talked the Brewer (Luke) into filling up a 'take-away' for me :p

Luke was also a judge at the NSW Comp a little while ago, so he is really supportive of the craft brew scene. Best to go mid week to catch him though if you want to poke your head in the brewery.

OK TREV,
So where is my sample of the Kolsch mate,
I thought we were a team !!!!!!!!!!!
C'mon mate, us Shire boys need to stick together.
:p

Yeah, I agree, the brewers at Potters are a great bunch of blokes. Luke wasn't there when I last went but the assistant brewer was instead (can't remember his name...) and he was only too happy to tell me all about the operation.

The Kolsch is a good beer - I never meant that their beers are bad. As much as there is a time and a place for Kolsch, and I do love the style, I just had my hopes up that there would be a nice hoppy APA or something, and instead I found out they had a Lager that is VERY generic, a Kolsch that is very good (but is never going to be a style that will really knock you off your feet), and a Bock that is not really a Bock (its almost more like an amber ale that is brewed with a lager yeast). I think I just had high hopes for a microbrewery that produced some really interesting beers, instead of conforming to commercially orientated stuff. Of course, there is less risk in producing commercial styles, and it is a business afterall, but it just frustrates me that even though there are more and more small breweries popping up, none of them seem to be branching away from the norm just yet. You go to the US and Canada and its a totally different story. I am probably too impatient :p - I'm sure it will all happen in good time.

I was at Potters the other Friday, after being rained off the Vintage golf course(had to brag)..The Kolsch wasnt what I was expecting from a Kolsch..The Wit was my pick...also had the Bock..

Havent made it to BT yet...maybe get rained out again??

They didn't have a wit last time I was there. I'm heading up in the next few weeks - I'll have to go and check it out. What was your impression?

They didn't have one at either time i was there either. Would be interesting.
I think the BT seasonal at the moment in a IPA which wasn't a bad drop when i had it at the BT brewery in the vineyards.

It was nice and smooth, with the typical belgian twang and the critus finish was there but a tad muted for the general tastes. I did recommend it to another punter there on the day and He went for it....he also came up to me later and told me I was spot on in my explination of the beer and he enjoyed it greatly..

ok boys i'm gunna say it strait go to potters, the beer are pretty good but the chicks that get there are even better ,it''s the only place they really go to in the hunter so what more do you want nice beers and a good perv.Put enough spade work in and you can stay at potters as well, how hard is it drink decent beers pull a chick an stagger out da back and ya doin ya porn moves, not very hard in a country town..
p.s hey linz maybe thats the call to stay there and organise a golf weekend up there.... or even a local one down ere i don't need much of a excuss to have a hit!!!!!!
