Hi Guys,

I got two JG gas splitters from craftbrewer, and i've installed one it works perfectly, while theother one is leaking.. :icon_drool2:

These things seem pretty simple to use (trust me to find a way to stuff it up) can anyone give me some tips on what can go wrong with installation? I have the three hoses inserted in the splitter, and two of them are leaking, I think the tubes ahaven't gone far enough in, but as hard as I push I can't get them to go in any further..

How can I install them properly, and also how do I get the hoses out once they're jammed in there..?

Thanks,
Matt

Just wet the end of each tube first Matt and then push them home until you feel them stop
PS....Make sure the ends are cut straight also!

Nice straight and clean cut and a smear of keg lube ...

cheers

I've also found that the shinier/harder lines work best as well. Not to say the softer ones don't... just have found more issues with the softer lines. Also Ive found that a nice straight cut of the line is best ie. try to avoid even a slight angle. You really have to push then home (another reason for the harder line).... then pull them back to lock them in. My 2 cents worth

Not all hoses have exactly the same OD, some of the cheaper hoses have a slightly smaller OD and this will cause leaks. I personally use John Guest hose for gas and Valpar Flexmaster II for beer lines.

Make sure the hose has been pushed all the way in... sometimes the hose can get caught up on the O-ring inside the JG fitting.

Cheers

A quick deburr of the end of the lines with a pencil sharpener sometimes makes for an easier insertion o the line :icon_cheers:

I dont know how you think of all these cool ideas Doogie

pumpy :)

to get the line out push it in and hold the grey part againts the fitting and pull the hose out. I also found you have to keep the line straight as if it bend to close to the fitting it will leak.

the splitters i got had brass barbs, one end fitted in the jg fitting, the other end used a clamp to attach the beer / gas line,

OK, so I got a micrometer and discovered that the clear gas line from my local HBS is 8.5-9.0mm is OD when its supposed to be 8mm. This resulted in the hose jamming when it reached the O rong and it couldn't go in far enough.

I have used a nice new sharp Stanley knife blade to get a really clean square cut, then 2-3 turns in a large pencil sharpener (awesome suggestion doogie) and it went in further than before, however I'm still not sure if it's far enough. I have pressurised the lines with the QD's disconnected up to 300kpa, then turned the bottle off. I'll monitor the bottle pressure to see if it's leaking at all. It seemed to be OK when I put the lines underwater, but time will tell.

If those doesn't work i'll buy some proper John guest 8mm line from the place I got the fittings from (craftbrewer) since that should all match up properly.

Thanks for the help fellas, also thanks to Ross from craftbrewer. (shameless plug)

Cheers,
Matt

I just got a bunch of John Guest fittings from the "authorised" dealer and they also gave me some John Guest hose to go with it which was nice. But when I put it all together it was making an audible hissing noise and leaking like a sieve! The only bits that weren't leaking were the bits where I used Valpar hose. So I pulled it all apart and made it again using JG fittings and all Valpar Flexmaster hose it seemed like a tighter fit and is working just fine. Quite odd that the JG hose was not a tight fit for the JG fittings (and I checked, they are all metric - not trying to match metric with imperial)

the j/g hose is harder and I found if there is a bend near the fitting it leaks so you try to run at least 4" before it starts to coil or bend or it will leak.

Makes perfect sense - although this (this issue, not your post) is pretty stoopid

Fark.

I just checked the pressures then and with the bottle turned off, the hi pressure gauge has dropped to zero, and the low pressure gauges have gone from 40psi down to about 25psi. Clearly I have a leak somewhere..

I'll be going for the Valpar Flexmaster hose at Ross's recommendation.

Don't for a minute think that posts to this forum aren't read by "others"... this isn't about brewing equipment, but IS about using John Guest fittings.

As a motorhomer with leaking water-line problems caused by John Guest fitting failure, i was at my wit's end trying to solve an ill-fitting/leaking JG component.

Thanks to Google I found my way to the Home Brewers forum... and a post by Doogiechap about using a pencil sharpener to smarten up the line ends... After two days of working in an extremely cramped and uncomfortable position under the chassis, Doogiechap's tip solved my problem in about 5 minutes.

Doogie - I salute you and thank you!http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/style_images/hops/folder_editor_images/rte-emo-button.png

Bloke no problem, and between you and me I heard this tip from another clever homebrewer :icon_cheers: I just wish I could remember his name to pass on the thanks, Happy camping !
Cheers

OK so the key to my success was using decent quality line. I ordered Valpar Flexmaster II from Ross and it was a piece of piss to install and it doesn't leak one little bit!

The Beva line I was using [is meant to be 8mm OD, but in reality its 9.5mm so it doesn't work with the JG fittings.

Moral of the the story, buy the best, buy it once and never worry again :)
