It's food grade esssee so it will do the job. Only thing is you would obviously break the seal if you wanted to get the element out. What element is it?
 
Could you try cut one from a silicon baking tray or similar?
 
Razz, it's an element from an old kettle.

I've got no problem with having the element a permanent fixture, although a thorough clean and reseal shouldn't be to difficult a task every so often.
 
When it says food grade, does that mean its o/k to be in contact with something which may be consumed or just o/k for kitchen bench tops etc. A lot of those sealants are impregnated with fungicides, have you tried plumbing stores for fibre washers.

Yep, that is what food grade should mean.

I reckon this is the way to go. Custom silicone washer, with plenty of sheet left spare for other brewing projects.

Only thing I can't see on the package is a temperature rating.
