Today I went to Tandy and Dick Smith for a set of electronic scales. Prices started at $80! There was a cheaper set at $49 but with only 2 gram accuracy. A search on AHB shows only one post that even mentions hop scales.

I was hoping Ross might include these in his inventory but he suspects postage costs will make it of no value to us consumers. As for me, I'd just like to be able to know where to buy the things a little cheaper than eighty bucks!

I've heard Jye has, and I quote, 'a tiny one that looks like a crack merchant's scale.'

So Jye, or anyone else that has scales, could you possibly steer me in the right (as in cheaper) direction?

Cheers

I doubt you'll get better than 2 gram accuracy for a low price. Well, you may get scales with a 1 gram gradient, but I would doubt their accuracy if they're < $80.

fwiw, I bought my 2g accuracy scales (which I reckon is fine for anything in brewing except mineral adjustments) for about $30 from Victoria's Basement - a kitchen specialty shop in Sydney's Queen Victoria Building.

PistolPatch, I got mine from big W, cost around $20-25 from memory. They are 1g accuracy upto 2 kg

Had two coppers [wifes family] ask why I have two electronic scales [one upstairs one in the shed] for brewing  I weigh hops and malt :) TRUE, Yeah, sure what else? They said Eh, yeast and NO choof  don't touch it [which is true].

I bought a 100g, 0.01g accuracy digital pocket scale from eBay for under $40 excluding postage.

Yeah ebay is the go. I got mine for around $25 delivered and they are great, 0.01gm accuracy.

BigW 1g up to 2kg scales for 29.95 here.

Me too.
The guy selling them is located in Perth. His eBay ID is BrayCo from memory.
And to quote Jamil:

If the scales are good enough for weighing cocaine, they are suitable for hops
:p

I have a set of 0-5000g scales, in 1g increments. Cost me $50 from the good guys, brand is Heller.

I love em, can be used for both hops and grain.

If you want something truly scary, try looking at gemstone scales. The prices of something that will weigh down to 0.01 carat (5 carat = 1 gram) is truly scary.

Have a look in a Harris Scarfe store if there's one near you. I grabbed my electronic scales on special for $34.95 on special. It weighs up to 3kg in 1gm increments. Don't know how accurate it is but I have used it a fair bit with my baking/cooking, and a bit of brewing. So far, I have no reason to doubt it's accuracy.

Cheers :)

Ebay is the way to go just watch out for shipping charges most are ok there is the odd one that seems to charge more for shipping than the scales.

i got mine from bigw too. was going to get it off ebay but saw it at bigw first.

The Jaycar link above didnt work for me... I got these from Jaycar last year...

I got a set of ebay scales same as this > http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Silver-7Kg-Postal-S...7QQcmdZViewItem

I was looking for something with at least 1g resolution & highest capacity i could find. I can use these to weigh beer ingredients as well as engine & car parts.

Interestingly I was accidentally sent a 1kg calibration weight from livingstone recently, the scales were within 1g.

They have dissapeared from my ebay history now but i think i paid ~$50 total.

Got mine from ebay for about $20, 200g and 0.1g resolution.

My brother picked up the same scales for $2 plus postage not long ago.

It looks like it might be time for me to upgrade my scales!
