Hey guys,

Nabbed an old keg from my bosses place he was gonna throw out this arvo (was a home-made still....shhhh!), anyway the neck??? has been cut off and a column soldered to it (column bent in half....stuffed). would it be worth cutting the top off and welding a corny top on it?

Cheers!

IMO I'd turn it into a kettle/tun etc.... sounds like a big hassle seeming as you can get second hand 50l kegs and you just need to buy the fittings...

From what I've been told, can be a bit hard as the corny is made of a very thin material & hard to weld.
I have seen a photo of another brewer on here that had one.

+1 agree. Probably quicker just to buy the fittings. But if the keg is already damaged/modified then could be better of used for a mash tun/ HLT / Keggle etc.

me and a mate are converting a couple of 50's in a few weeks, a corny that i found at the local tip shop for $10 is being sacrificed for one of them, i'm just going to slice the top off the corny and weld it in, i'll run the purge line through the one of the post holes so the welds are smick.

why not just buy the fitting ? are 50's hard to clean and fill if left standard ?

seems like a lot of work to convert one but i have NFI about it really

i have the fittings already but it's no trouble to convert it, i've never cleaned a 50 but it's got to be easier with a hole and a lid in it.

Do us a favour please yardy mate, let us know how they turn out hey? I can weld, so no probs with the mod. Seen quite a few on EBAY pop up from time to time, thought it might be the way to go.

It would be great for racking for a pils or just for a dry hop monster.
