In my recent plunge into this hobby, I think I have been through what I assume everybody else has been through in the everlasting search for good cheap reusable bottles. Also probably begging every family member and friend not to throw out theirs...

In my hunt I found that at IKEA sell some pretty solid transparent swing top bottles (think grolsh style). They hold 1100ml's and go for the costly sum of $1.99. I thought that this was pretty good size as it is almost a 2 pint bottle(good for sharing).

From memory I think they are labelled Korkage, also a point to note is that 9 x of these bottles fit nicely into a milk crate.

I understand that not everybody likes transparent glass for beer bottles but each to their own. DSC02627.JPG

Heineken for size...

You realise that this doesn't do anything to negate the inherent flaws in bottling in clear glass, yeah?

So if I bottle in brown glass and store in a cool dark place, or bottle in clear glass and store in a cool dark place.... Light is not an issue?

How long do you think light strike takes? That's a big bottle.

how much pressure will those bottles take, probably only designed for water.

You can get new long necks for about 50 cents each if you buy a pallet of approximately 1000. Should organized a bulk buy.

I found them cheaper than that... 120 minimum spend pay about 60c each bottle. I can't remember exactly how many

was a few cases that's for sure. Pick up in Melbourne.. if anyone is interested in the link let me know and I'll dig it up.

When I say cheaper I mean you dont need to get 1000

pretty sure that's the place i was talking about... even better if the minimum order is 90 bucks...

Yeah Plasdene must've increased their minimum order because it was $120 a couple of weeks back. Simo and I are halving an order shortly

Yeah Plasdene was the place I was talking about also. Here in Adelaide the minimum order was $70 last time I went, and it was the 640ml bottles that were going for 83 cents. That equates to a purchase of 7 dozen.
Plasdene website has the pressure rating for various bottles on it. Interestingly, the bottles that Bundaberg ginger beer comes in is rated at 5 gas volumes, which is the top of the range. They take a PET bottle cap.

I used similar swing top bottles from a few local variety shops for apple cider.

They just couldn't hold a decent carbonation. The mechanism is designed to seal the bottle, but not keep pressure in.

They'd be ideal for a fruit wine or still cider though, so I kept them.

Compare the tightness of the seal against a grolsch bottle and you'll get the idea, but on the positive side no bottle bombs...
