Hi All
I've just begun brewing beer again after 15 odd years of drinking the fruits of others.

A mate & I put down a Munich Lager (kit) just after Xmas as our first attempt back into the land of the brew-meister. All has gone well but for some reason when we added the priming sugar we had to cap straight away as the beer began to froth like mad (my garage became the home of the bottle capping Olymics :D ).

We used carbonation drops on half the bottles & sugar on the second half of the bottles with the same outcome for both. SG reading at bottling stage was 1006. We have a fairly clear lid on the fermentation tank and it appear as if activity had stopped, beer looked clear & so we left this for a couple of days to settle out more.

All we can put this down to is that the beer had too much yeast still active at bottling stage (we were desperate to start drinking as quickly as possible :chug: ) and we should have left it in the fermentation tank for another day or so......any thoughts, advice comments pls?

Many thanks
Low Hang'n (Easing back ito brew'n my own beer again)

Thanks, just registered as Low Hang'n

When I prime (each bottle with plain white sugar) I find I have to put the sugar in the bottle first, then beer on top. If I fill the bottle with beer and drop the sugar onto it, KABOOM.

not sure if thats any help with carb drops... hope so.

*makes mental note to buy another fermenter for bulk priming

G'day Low

Do a search of this site for bulk priming. It's a much better way to go.

Thanks, will have a gander.

Any idea on why I'm getting so much frothing at the bottle stage though. Can't remember this being an issue all those many years ago.

Will look into another fermenter as well :super:

Hi Low Hang'n, sounds as if your priming after you have bottled, is this correct? Always prime bottle first then fill with Beer.........MMMM beer!
Even better, as others have already said to bulk prime with about 180-200gm in another tub.

Perhaps you could try one of those "little bottlers". They are a tube with a little spring loaded valve at the bottom and cost about $5 from your local home brew shop.

It reduced my froth on beers with a lot of wheat in them.

Adding sugar to beer provides nucleation sites for CO2 to come out of solution which causes the frothing. Like Punter said, if you bottle prime add the sugar before you fill the bottles & then give them a bit of a mix after you cap them.

Yes, added after the beer was in the bottle. Will give the reverse a go next brew that is due to be bottled next weekend. So far haven't had any big bangs with the bottled beer thus far.

Will give the bulk priming caper a go, probably on the next batch.

Thanks for the input

Cheers

Thanks, will get the suger in first next brew (due in about a week), will then do the bulk priming caper. Just easing back into this and need to re-aquaint my self with all the jargon.

What's with all the beer bootle icons against your moniker? Is that an indication of the beer you've made or the beer you've drunk :chug: ?

well im just browsing through this one punter and i think you may be a bit generous with your sugar for bulk priming,180 to 200 grms i would say is far too much,i use 120 grms for 21/23 litres and seems to work out just fine.i know we all like different carbonation levels but 120 grms i think would be better suited ,exscuse me if im wrong as you may well use that amount and be happy with it,i noticed a lot of the xmas case beers from sa were way over carbed and this may be due to the fact that a lot of the guys keg and dont bottle that often, any way every one has their own formula, putting more sugar in at priming will carb up your beer quicker but the trouble then is it keeps carbing up and after a month it is really jumping out of the bottle
cheers

Thanks for the info Fergi but I haven't done a bulk prime as yet, will do that next time around and will keep your tips handy. Just been doing the kit thing and priming the bottles with carbonation drops or sugar.

Cheers

Cheers Fergi,
180-200gm is on the upper limits I know, but I like mine on the fizzy side.
