Hi all,

I have been growing some hops, Chinook and Columbus.
They are almost ready for harvesting so I'm thinking of making my own first harvest ale and trying wet hopping.
I have read that when wet hopping you should use 5 times the amount of dry hops.

I'm thing of a double batch of amber ale along the lines of this

9.00 kg Pale Malt, Traditional Ale (Joe White) (5.9 EBC) Grain 87.80 %
0.50 kg Caramalt (Joe White) (49.3 EBC) Grain 4.88 %
0.50 kg Munich, Light (Joe White) (17.7 EBC) Grain 4.88 %
0.25 kg Crystal, Dark (Joe White) (216.7 EBC) Grain 2.44 %
45.00 gm Northern Brewer [7.60 %] (60 min) Hops 18.2 IBU
1.00 tsp Irish Moss (Boil 10.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs American Ale (Wyeast Labs #1056) [Starter 125 ml] Yeast-Ale

100 grams wet chinook 10 minutes
100 grams wet columbus 10 minutes
50 grams wet chinook flame out
50 grams wet columbus flame out

Does this look a bit over the top with wet hop additions ?

It doesn't look too over the top to me. I would switch round the quantities though, and put a bigger addition at flame out than at 10. Alternatively, just start throwing in handfuls of hops for the last few minutes. Smells great. :D

One thing to factor in is that you'll lose some wort to absorption with that amount of hops in the kettle.

I would add some of the hops as a dry hop addition. Wait till fermentation is finished then throw them in and crash chill for a few days

Let us know how it goes

kabooby :)

Moray,

How did this harvest ale turn out? My hops are gunning along and my thoughts have turned to a Harvest Ale.
