Hi.

Was looking in the recipes section for an extract recipe to try and make something with the small mountain of DME I have.

Most (well, nearly all) the extract recipes also call for a small amount of specialty grain.

So what I'm curious about is when does an extract recipe becomes a partial mash recipe?

An extract recipe will nearly always contain some amount of specialty grains, which are steeped but not mashed. Once you use a base grain, that requires mashing to convert the sugars, then you have a mini or a partial.

Crystal grain for example does not require mashing, but wheat grain does...

Here's an all extract (and some sugar) recipe I made a while back, if you dont' want any grain at all. An aged version of this got a bronze score and was half a point of a place in my club comp in the bitters and pale ales section...

You could easily convert to DME...

3 kg liquid malt extract, 500g raw sugar, 50g fuggles hops.SAFALE S-04 Yeast

250g of LME, 250g sugar and 35g Fuggles at 60. 3.25kg LME, 250g sugar, 15g Fuggles at 5. Strain into the fermenter. Fill to 19L
