Hi guys helping a first time brewer . He has purchased a Black Rock NZ IPA . I think it is just a K&k
thought I might help him with possibly 3kg of dme 350gm crystal malt and 200gm of cara-pils and 28gm of chinook for bittering and 30gm of cascade flavour and 40gm of cascade for aroma. Sound ok ? I beleive he is not really a hop head like the rest of us . :icon_drunk: any suggestions ?

3kg sounds a bit excessive to me, but I'm no expert. 1.5kg sounds more like it.

3kg of malt extract does sound like too much depending on how strong and sweet he likes it (the crystal will add sweetness too). I'd go something between 1 and 2 kg of DME.

If he's not a hop head (something I can actually understand - I find overstated hops can detract from the balance of the brew) then 40g aroma might be overdoing it.

It's a bit like determining the length of a piece of string, horses for courses and all that. Myself (as a non-hop head) I'd go between 10 and 20 unless you're wanting to challenge his non-hopness. Also check how bitter the IPA tin is already before you add extra bittering hops. Obviously IPA is meant to showcase the hop profile so my preference is simply that (and I ain't drinking it am I?).

Out of interest - why 28 rather than 30 or 25?

Thanks heaps I threw in a large amount of dme only because it really pushes up the alcohol content . I have to agree maybe tone down the dme. 28 is 1oz plus that is what i have left after the last brew. I read on a google site a review on this product and most of them said it lacked in flavour and hops.

For an IPA or in general? Because if your mate isn't into hops then even a low-level IPA might be too much for him maybe.

Thanks bum I will check it out when I see him on wednesday. I bottled some nut brown a few weeks ago
it is still a liitle green it has a big hop flavour so I will get him to try it if he likes it I will definately throw in the 40g's of cascade for aroma
