Sorry Haysie, a little OT but will ask while it is up,

I am about to buy an over the side immersion heater to heat strike and mash out water and help to bring wort to boil..

So you have answered my first Q: Are they safe to use in wort to help bring to boil... Using 4 ring as well and that will maintain boil... Just use immersion to get the be'arch up and turning!

Next Q: Can you just stir your mash with it to bring to mash out temp or do they 'burn' your grain/mash?

Sorry, may be stupid question but just thinking about it...

Cheers

Could call this OT as well.

I am an avid fan of the element having used them previously for my kettle. In recent times have changed back to a gas burner like the one pictured. A 23 jet mongolian available from G & G. Still use the elements for my herms and HLT. The mongolian is available in a 11 jet as well, I think. The one I have brings 85ltrs to the boil in no time. Gas consumption on mine is around 4 brews per 9kg cylinder and the mongolian operates off the standard barby reg. Won't run at all on a variable. Yep have a three ring burner as well but I find the mungrel burner far more effective.

Just some food for thought for others.

I have one of the 2200w elements on order from G&G at the moment. I'm planing on mounting it to a HLT to get the water up to temp.

I just have a question about the pickup. Do you guys have the pickup to drain your vessle BELOW the element? So when the vessle is drained there is still some water/wort covering (or atleast partly) the element to prevent it overheating and killing itself if it is accidently left on.

Good point, My element is above only because it cant go any lower due to my kettle having a domed bottom.

That is exactly what i will be doing when i finally get my HLT setup. Im sure if you accidently left it on you probably woulndt do it again but not worth the risk imo.

Haysie - how long to get how many litres up to the boil?

Well my initial plan was to use an immersion element for the HLT. If I did that I would put a bit of bent copper pipe to the bottom, that way you only leave about 100ml in the bottom (my HLT has a domed bottom too).

I guess you could do a simmilar thing and have the pipe curve up to make the pickup above the element, thus the element is always under water. I can see the downside however, you are heating around 2-3L of water you never use. A bit waistfull but if it saves the element probibly worth it.

Not sure if it's worth the effort/ waste because if you leave the element on you will probably only have a few spare minute to turn it of as it will probably boil dry anyway.

My point is, just make sure you turn it off.

Sparging now Fents, post back later for you. The volume will be 32 ltrs.

Turned the new element on once it was covered, approx 10 ltrs, final volume 32, with the kettle lid on because its so bloody cold here it took a whopping 30 minutes :) Pretty much the same as when I use the immersion.

Cheers
