E. Melbourne Yeast Vials Mini-Buy

Hey Melbsy types,

Seeing as there are so many yeast buys on at the moment, I seem to have come into a rather urgent need for more vials, and I'm guessing there are others in my position. If not, no stress. I'm thinking 30ml autoclavable, but if we get numbers, you little peckers can get your 15's I reckon. I've been using 50's, but storage space wise, the 30's are looking pretty damn good with over 100 vials about to hit my freezer. I'm still confirming prices, but it looks like around $160 delivered for 500 of the 30's. That's close to the mark, but not a confirmed price.

Among the questions remaining to be answered is would we want sterilised ones? I figure the cost difference isn't huge, so maybe some added peace of mind. But then, we're all sterilising to our own chosen level when we prep vials, aren't we?

Anyone else need some? 15's? 30's? 50's? I can't commit to shipping out to folks, as I have some pretty solid surgery coming up in the next month or so that will involve a very long recovery. However, if you want to pick up from Ferntree Gully, I think we can get a decent price. I may be able to work out a drop more central to the rest of Melbourne, but that depends on someone in that area volunteering, as I no longer work out there.

Once the buy looks viable it'll become easier to choose a supplier and see what else might be available. I plan on grabbing a couple extra bits myself, so that is totally possible. There are only a couple suppliers that carry the 30's, but if the 30's crap out and folks want 50's, more suppliers come into play.

I'm still kicking myself buying not sterile vials from the BB a while back. Have had some autoclaved but they distort in shape and some lids have cracked as the autoclave I have access to is dental and therefore quite hot (135C from memory).

aaaanyway I'm probably in need of a new batch (don't have many left). Got some photos of these and do they stand up on their own? I'm still in the dark ages of storage under water and in fridge only. Granted I will freeze eventually but thinking for now maybe the 50mL is a better size if not freezing, what are your thoughts?

The tubes are the self-standing ones and they are autoclaveable to 121C, so in terms of your autoclave, I'd say think about buying a pressure cooker, as you move in to freezing yeast. Which you should . You can usually get them at op shops for very little, and Aldi has them from time to time.

Thanks for the input on the sterile. Seems like a good idea to pay the minimal amount extra just to make sure.

OK, so the supplier I was going to get the 30's seems to have completely dropped off the map. However, there are a couple others out there. I just need to confirm some details about the vials - i.e. making absolutely sure they're autoclavable, etc. I should have final figures in a couple days and we'll be good to go.
