Hi Guys,

I've been bashing away at Beersmith working on a recipe that I based on Dr Smurto's as a starting point. Adding more grain, more hops and changing up the hop schedule... Looking forward to making this Saturday. I've read some good things about Amarillo and Citra together... Hopefully it will be as good as I think it could be.

The only thing I'm not sold on completely is the IBU's, was tempted to go up a few more notches but figure I'll leave it as my chiller will take a good 20 minutes to get the heat down and I might get a few more units from the 0 minute additions.

Thoughts?

I guess it's probably no longer considered a golden ale due to the extra hops and alcohol content... this will be my 6th brew and I'm not exactly sure on the rules here but I do like the idea of going with something different.

Notes

Created with BeerSmith

If this had an OG of 1047 and 35 ibus dont expect it to last long, should be an absolute cracker!

Cheers

Are you aiming for an IPA with the golden ale grain bill? or just a higher alcohol version?

I was going for a higher alcohol beer, more hoppy but without the ibu's of a typical ipa. Just going for balance & variety mainly across my 3 taps, I got another 2 beers fermenting, a hoppy pale ale around 44 ibu's and the ipa is 55 with near 235 grams of hops @ 7.5alc see the last Page of the hop hog Clone for the ipa recipe I made.

Putting Smurtos golden ale through beersmith gives me a beer at about 6.8% around 40-45 ibu for the same bittering ratio as the golden ale.

I agree, 6.8% with only 35 IBU is a bit out of balance, go for 45 or 50 IBU at least, so the hops balance out all that malt.

Thanks for the pointers guys, that's what I wasn't sure about.... Makes sense now in hindsight, more malt means more ibu's to balance it out. I'll try it later, maybe the 60min hops go up to 10 grams each and the 10 minute additions become 15. Will put it through beer smith later, should get me pretty close to the suggested numbers.

Just ran it through with the changes I just suggested, came up 46 ibu's.

Itsnot just about the IBU though, its about how you get to it, you know, a dump @ 60 isnt the same as th same IBU with multiple additions throughout.. I love it, that's where it becomes craft beer, not just the Malts, not jet the hop and additions, not just the yeast or ferment temps but a blend of all of them and 1000 different ways to do it.. But only 1 way of how you want it ;)
