I'd be surprised if you could get it shipped in any temp controlled manner that would still be cheaper than LHBS prices. Interesting idea though. If you got enough blokes here together it could possibly be feasible. But then what is your time worth? For me, $5 to improve a brew isn't all that outrageous - and then you can still re-use it if you're that way inclined.

Just thought I'd make a comment about the "swirling". You say you used a sanitised spoon, that could be how the infection got in. I prefer to just give the whole fermenter a swirl without opening it up, less risk of any nasties getting in.
