Hi all,

Anybody know of any commercial imperial stouts I may be able to pick up in Sydney. I'm looking to try a few...

Agro.

Funny you should ask 'cos right now I am drinking Southwark Old Stout, which is the closest I have found to an Imperial Stout. In reality its on the low side of an IS - has 7.4%ABV and low hopping - or you might think of it as a strong version of a foreign extra stout. But its a good start.

If you ever get the chance, I suggest go to the Wig and Pen in Canberra, they have a seasonal IS that is fantastic. BTW, "seasonal" means you have to find out when they have it on to try it.

Apart from that, I would also be interested to hear whats available in Sydney.

I just went to Croydon Cellars (one of the few independents left in Sydney) and no luck on an imperial, although a range of 'Old' stouts to choose from.

Instead I have opted to go the Belgian route to try something different.

Currently sampling a Duvel. I have a Dark Weissbier, Chimay Red and a Chimay Blue to try later this week. A really nice selection at Croydon.

Cheers
Jason.

Samuel Smith's is available in oz, not the land of oz i mean aus sorry.
Its a brittish brewery in tadcaster yorkshire and is a bloody unreal drop.
They also make a oatmeal stout but i'am yet to find that one.

agro you won't find any actual imperial stouts in sydney unless you make em yourself.

sam smiths imperial i've seen at purvis cellars in melbourne but never in sydney. very yummy but at 7%odd not as "imperial" as they come.

then there's the wignpen imperial which is a 13% beast which i've narrowly missed out on the last two times ive been to canberra. bugger.

about the best you can get in sydney is Sinha stout from sri lanka which is 8% and very nice indeed. try camperdown cellars or amatos or liquor on parade. ("Sinha" is the name Lion Stout goes under in this country for some reason - can't see Lion Nathan making an 8% stout)

otherwise this online store in melbourne has recently got in a 10% stout from Durham:

http://www.megabeer.com/shop/product_info....&products_id=51

but you have to buy 12 beers to get it.

oh, and also you should get down to redoak in the city to try their baltic porter - 8% i think and black as the bugblatter beast of traal. delicious. but it's $15 a bottle or something preposterous.

oh and that shop in croydon has a nice little selection. went in there the first time last week. good to see an independent place that knows their stuff.

the indian/sri lankan restaurant across the road is fen amazing too! should get a sinha stout to have with a lamb vindaloo next time...

As you are at Concord, wander down Parramatta Rd to Paddy's. Callum is brewing a Foreign Stout for the beer awards in Melb. There are a few other interesting beers on tap too.
Cheers

Well I know you aren't asking me, but I did and it was good. In great condition and dirt cheap, relatively speaking.

As for the original question, Wicked Ale Dirty Dan's Dark Delight is available in Melbourne on top of those mentioned. Not sure if it made it to Sydney though. And I'm DEFINITELY heading to the W&P this winter...

there you go i'm glad someone can answer your question warren! havent got round to it yet but i will soon - along with some poperings hommelbier which is also good stuff.

Maybe BERP can confirm this, but as I recall the Sri Lankan LIon Stout which has been stocked by some Sydney Outlets (Northmead cellars from memory) is close to an Imperial.

The wife(Little Squares) just took delivery of Her purchase from Megabeer. There was a commercial RIS is amongst it....

Looks good, Linz and Little Squares. Which ones are you bringing along to the IBS meeting? :super:

Swan Stout is a great drop at 7.4 % you don't need to visit the fridge too often when watching the rugby. I don't know if it's avaliable in Sydney.

Sorry Stuster......

We'll be supping on Wig & Pen brews on Saturday...

The 2nd from the right is the RIS..and the warmer the better. The label even stated "do not serve below 8oC".
