Bulb faces down, vessel should be as full as possible when hydrometer is in so that it floats off the bottom.

Run out half a tube and either drink or discard just in case there's some sugar that hasn't yet dissolved in the tap. Then run out again.

Twirl, let it settle, highest reading is where to read it from. Also if the lid is clear or translucent, see if there's condensation forming (another sign of fermentation)

Yer there is definatly condensation on the top... so i may leave it a few more days before taking a reading.. give it a bit of time... thanks mate

I did my first cider kit about 2 months ago and just had a bottle. Its was a black rock kit with dex - mmmmmmm verrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrry dry indeed.
Anyone got any ideas on how I can save it without throwing it out?

Cheers

When it's to dry I find the easiest way to fix this is to add apple juice when serving. Add a little and then taste it, if its still to dry add a little more.

If you that the addition of apple juice takes away to much of the carbonation add sparkly apple juice

Age it out in a cupboard for a while.

Then when serving mix it with fresh juice in a glass in 1/3 to 1/2 fresh with remainder black rock.

Is it just me or does the Black Rock make me itch or have a skin reaction? All my non kit ciders don't do that and can be drunk soon after when done fermenting. I have three tins of non-cider kits I really haven't touched for years because of this :p

I've not done the sugar with Black Rock but two or more teaspoons of sugar and stir like mad in the glass. Any residual will dissolve in a few more minutes.

Cheers,
Brewer Pete

You could always mix it 50/50 in the glass with whatever beer you're drinking. "Snakebite". Very refreshing and -hic- potent!! B)
