I found this recipe on the abc website. Has anyone tried it?

SIMPLY CHOCOLATE:

1 can stout mix
1kg can dark dried malt
250ml chocolate topping
200g dried malt additive (optional)

To make life easier with the dried malt additive, put it in a jug and pour boiling hot water over it and stir to dissolve. If you use water that isn't boiling it will clump into a great big ball that will be next to impossible to dissolve.

Next, add all the ingredients to the fermenter and ferment in the normal way. Unlike most stout, this one is ready to drink at about 3 weeks and has a beautiful creamy head.

Approx F.G. 1020 6% alcohol

Sounds interesting. Ive been meaning to try a chocolate brew for ***** and giggles.

What would one use for the dried malt additive though??

Shamus, I gave this one a go a couple of years ago and was pretty happy with it comparing it to my other K&K brews. The 'favour' of the topping seemed to come through more than I would have liked but it was a nice easy recipe and a nice change to what else I was brewing at the time. Definately give it a go :) . When you decide to cross over to AG I would strongly reccomend Doc's Choc Oatmeal Porter.
Cheers

what did you use for the malt extract?
is it what I posted earlier or something like this?

I assume the malt additive would be body brew.

Hi guys,

long time lurker, first time poster here :D

The choc stout recipe posted about here is actually one made up by my LHBS belive it or not!

the "dried malt additive" they speak of is actually nothing but maltodextrine (sp?) aka corn sugar. as most of you probably already know, its nothing really more than just a non-fermentable that gives your beer a bit more body, but in large amounts can give it a bit of a "slimy" mouthfeel.

I've made the choc stout before, and, IMO it turned out great! will be making another batch soon ready for some nice winter drinking.

only suggestion I would give would be to do as i did and add in another extra 500g of brown sugar. Really tops it off (and boosts the alc. content if you like that as well ;) came out to be around 7.2% after carbonation iirc)

I've only ever tried it with just a stock coopers kit, as I haven't made it for quite some time now, and didn't really know all that much about brewing back then, but even so, I still think it turned out great, and wouldn't hesitate to recommend anyone try this recipe out.

Hey fellas,
Sorry to ask a dumb-arse question...but for that 250ml chocolate topping...do you just mean like icecream topping???
