Just happened to have my work environmental handbook in front of me (I need to stick it in my safety bag after this post!).
"Only clean rainwater is allowed to enter a waterway or drain. Any other liquid or solid is considered pollutant"
yadi yadi yada... fines for individuals & companies.... yadi yadi yada....

Here's the EPA site FYI.
link

Doubt i'd do it either... but....

Are we then gonna police all the old dudes that hose the leaves off their driveways? Or even just the leaves that fall in public streets and get washed in with the rain? should we sick the EPA on to the local council? The detergents from people washing their cars in the street would be doing our waterways far more harm.

Methinks the EPA have got bigger fish to fry...

I use a march pump and have a 2 tier set up it allows me to fly sparge easily

Drain = sewage & treatment works.
Gutter = stormwater & then creeks = if you get caught EPA will have a field day.
Bloody stupid posting a photo of that one! (damn awesome setup and site though)

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't know what the laws in Michigan in particular or the US in general say about pollution/littering, but I can say that the law in Canada only prohibits dumping material that won't biodegrade. There may be regional bylaws that stipulate otherwise, but I know that the blanket federal legislation is only concerned with non-biodegradable things. Considering how similar most of the laws in Canada and the US are, I wouldn't be surprised if they have a similar litter/pollution law.

For what it's worth, I used to dump my trub in the gutter in front of my house too. My take on it was that it was diluting all the paint, solvents, and motor oil that other people were dumping. <_<

Pogo stick is to the right of the mash paddle.

I know what you mean schooey, it just that, come on... he's right out in front of his place pouring **** down the drain!
Actually reminds me of Cousin Ed off National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, emptying his septic tank... "Merry Christmas! Crapper's Full!"

this is what i have been told...care to try and explain why its easier with 2 tier + pump? not being funny i really really want to know.

True.

But to the EPA there's probably some endangered frog that's at risk of choking on a hop flower.

:icon_offtopic: Who the #$%^ still hoses their driveway down? In this climate? Christ on a bike thats retarded.

Tis a nice easy looking system but as a person who doesnt have a march pump i would swap the HLT and kettle around and voila!

I also thought the march pump negated the need for levels on the brew rig?

The cover is a little OCD.

When fly sparging (as opposed to batch sparging), you need hot water going into the top of the tun while you draw wort out the bottom. So if you have your mash tun and kettle at the same level and your hot liquor tank above, you would need to pump the wort from the tun into the kettle while you gravity feed water into the top of the tun. Alternately, you could have the hot liquor tank and mash tun at high level and the kettle below. Here you would let gravity drain the wort into the kettle, while pumping your hot water into the top of the mash tun. It is easier to have the HLT up high, because you need to be able to see into your mash tun and kettle.

Just to be different, I have my mash tun up high as I don't want anything but hot water going thru the march pump. HLT and Kettle are on the same level

you guys crack me up...

LOOK AT THE SHINY BREW RIG

oh noes someones pouring hops down the gutter in america....

Hang on. So you're telling me that someone started a thread on a brewing related topic and then a bunch of people went off on a tangent that sometimes descended into a slight (or not so slight) slanging match? On this site?
Well there's a first time for everything I suppose ;)

Copperlode Dam in Cairns dropped to 91% yesterday, made the news as well as it is now 1m down from the top of the spillway. Glad the wet season is about to start to fill it back up.

I could do with a cover like that. :(
You have to admire the man's ability to create that nice website.

Take a closer look at the workbench. ;)

TP

I agree
Apart from some flash arse cover, the systems no better than many here.
In fact there are plenty better!
