hey fellas

ive been doing kits for a while now, and really want to move into grain

my mate recommends trying cara malts in regards to steeping to give the brew that extra something

im on the verge of BIAB, but wanted to get suggestions of a cara recipe or ideas to kick me in the right direction

any advise would be tops

cheers

What kinds of beers do you enjoy?

Would go well in UK bitter or American pale and both of those can be made very simply.
You want to add it to a kit or make an extract brew?

hi manticle

always a wealth of knowledge :beerbang:

pretty keen on a pale or ipa with a fair bit of hops - an extract would be ideal

cheers again

Start with either a pale, low hopped base kit or better - some pale extract.

If you have access to either briess malt extract or weyerman extract and you are happy to spend the extra (bit pricy) then go for around 20% munich malt extract and the rest of the base a pale malt extract. Then get 250g (this is for a standard 20-25 L batch) of a good english crystal like simpsons (go for medium or heritage if available). Aim for a gravity of at least 1055 (use ianh's spreadsheet)

Crack and steep the grain according to regular steeping practices (which I assume you've been reading about - otherwise go here: http://www.aussiehomebrewer.com/forum/inde...;showarticle=80 ) and add the liquid to your boil according to standard extract brewing practices.

Pick your favourite US hop (or 2 or 3 etc). Cascade is a great base and works well with amarillo, chinook, simcoe or on its own.

Aim for 45-55 IBU (unless you push much past around 1060 with your extract, in which case consider upping the total IBU) Add bittering hops to get around half your bitterness at 60 minutes or so
then add a fair whack more at 20, 10 and 0 minutes to make up the rest.

Ferment with one or two packs of US05 - 2 if the gravity is pushing past 1055. Dry hop with the same hops when fermentation is not super active.
Cold condition if you can for around 5 days.
