How do i determine how much grain to how much water, is there a formula?

Assuming you are going to use the same vessel every time, then once you have worked out your initial liquor level for a typical grain bill, measure it from the top of the pot, write it down and you'll be flying for subsequent brews. Eventually after a few sessions you'll just 'know' if it's right, and will be able to intuitively vary it for big / small grain bills.

Here's a trick. Weight your grain bill.

Get your grain and put in in your bag and tie it up. Put the bag in the pot/mash tun.

Keep on adding water 2 liters at a time until you are about an inch or two from overflowing.

That's how much water you need to have in your pot for your mash.

To use your (now) wet grain...

Weight your wet grain.

Subtract the wet grain weight from the dry grain weight and use less water this time only (1L = 1kg).

...or just guess it like I do and swear lots when you've got lots of grain left and no more room in the pot.
