I'm doing a job in Newcastle at the moment (Uni of Newcastle) and will be staying on the Central Coast tomorrow night.
Will need to pickup some supplies on the way out of Newcastle tomorrow night.
What is the best bottle shop to hitup ?
Please give a street address so I can find it easily as I don't know Newie (but my SatNav does :p )

TIA,
Doc

G'day Doc,

I work at the Uni - maybe we could catch up. I'll be out there tomorrow...

As for the Bottlos, I'm assuming it is interesting beer you are after. Corkers at Kahibah is your best bet, but is out of the way and tricky to find. Its address is: Cnr Glebe and Burwood Road, Kahibah, 2290 ph 49436444 Is kinda sorta (well maybe not  ) on your way out of town to the CC if you take the old Pacific Highway out of Newcastle toward Charlestown. Like I said though, it is out of the way...

Another good one, although not as good these days in terms of beer stocks is Corkers on Beaumont, Beaumont Street Hamilton 2303. It is more central and easier to find but is gradually dropping its beer stock compared to the good old days. Kahibah is a small shop but has good beers and is run by enthusiasts :)

On the major roads out of town heading south from the Uni to the CC I can't really think of any particularly good bottlos - just the general run of the mill. These two have a decent selection of beers usually but will take a special trip.

Might see you round. Give us a shout.

Shawn.

Corkers at Kahibah sounds the go then.
Out of the way isn't really an issue. SatNav will find it for me and my backup plan was to go via Potters in the Hunter :p

Thanks for the info Gough, and hope we can hook up tomorrow.

Beers,
DR

The wonders of sat-nav eh... Like I said the Kahibah shop is only small, but worth a look if you're after decent beers. I'm a fan of the Potter's Kolsch on tap at the pub/brewery but recently tried the bottled version at the Australian in the Rocks and didn't rate it at all  Might be a long trip to Cessnock for no real result...

Hope to see you tomorrow,

Shawn.

G'day Doc

Failing the other 2 shops, there is a Theo's at Belmont (turn left at the lights just before the shop) but they don't have a great range or if you can wait until you reach the CC, try Dan Murphy's at Westfield Tuggerah (Freeway end of the centre) - they have a pretty good selection including the famed 'wall of imports'.
I've been working my way through it since it opened at Xmas and I've got a fair ways to go.
I'm busy tonight else we could catch up also.
Where 'bouts you staying?

Shmick

Hey Schmick. Didn't get to check back on this topic during the day, so a bit late of a reply now. Staying at Umina Beach tonight.
Stopped at Corkers on the way here tonight. Great selection of beers. Pity the majority aren't refridgerated and are out of date.
Picked up a few nice samples and will be finishing with a St Sebastiaan Grand Cru before heading for the fart sack.

Great to catchup Gough. Hopefully next Monday we can all head out for a beer.

Beers,
Doc

G'day Doc,

Good to see you today. Sorry to hear the Kahibah bottlo let you down, although it does sound about right. The turnover just isn't there for the range they carry. I can usually find some decent stock 'up the back', but there is often a fair bit of old stock to get through first. Hope you came up with something decent :)

Hope to see you Monday,

Shawn.

Doc can you report back on the St Sebastiaan Grand Cru? I bought one there not long ago and it was in really bad nick.

cheers

n00ch

If it's from the St. Sebastiaan range there should be a little marker on the back right-hand side of the label. There should be 2 nicks in the label giving a "best-before" date. Being shipped here don't be surprised if it's long-gone. <_<

When in top condition it's a brilliant drop. The SS Dark has a magnificent Munich and Dark Malt profile. Only gripe is they're probably a little on the clean side for a Belgian. Just lack a tiny bit of complexity. :)

What a small world - I work at Newcastle Uni too :)

Where abouts are you doing work Doc - I am posting bets on some IT work out of the CT building :)

Cheers

Yeah i did check that Warren, the best before date was 2008 sometime.

Any chance of describing the head/carbonation level of teh Grand Cru? I have never had teh St Sebastiaan GC before so when i said it was in bad nick its only really in regards to what i would have thought it to be like.

Thanks

G'day Tynian, small world indeed. Definitely keen to get together out there one day for some brew talk. Breaks the monotony  Let me know if you're keen,

Shawn.

For sure Gough, that would be cool.

Mark and Keith have suggested I should catchup with you sometime to talk AG as i am getting ready to venture into this territory :)

There are actually a few of us IT guys here that are brewers :)

n00ch

I bought a bottle of it (and the dark) from La Bier Tempel in Brussels in 2003. Taste was good, head was nice and moussy/sherbety. Beer was most likely fresher than what you encountered.

I brought the Dark home with me and didn't drink it until about 6 months after purchase, taste was still very nice, however carbonation seemed to be lesser than the Grand Cru.

Was it in the pot-stoppered stoneware bottle when you had it? It's possible that these bottle may lose a bit of carb/conditioning over time? Good thing about them is that they'll never encounter light strike. :)

No worries mate. Check your PM inbox :)

Shawn.

Thanks for that Warren. That is exactly what i thought it should be like.

I bought one of the ceramic bottles with the thought of it not possibly being light effected. I opened it with great expectation and poured with absolutely no head at all.... No carbonation what so ever. Kind of annoyed seeing as it was a $18 bottle....

$18 a bottle!! Good grief.

I'd say n00ch it lays in no small part to the Grolsch style seals. Has probably leaked CO2 over a long period of time.

Nice beer, however no way on earth I'd pay $18 for it. That's expensive. <_<

Good to see the number of AGers on the rise.
Must be quite a few in the area now.
A good support network makes all the diff. :chug:

Must be time for a mash day at Mark's ;)

A mash day at Mark's sounds like a top idea. I would be in for sure.
