Beer Tips For Trip: Montreal, New York, Boston, Toronto, Ottawa

hi Im about to head OS for a month to Montreal, New York, Boston, Toronto, Ottawa,

Has anyone got any good suggestions for these areas.

Heading on a tour of McAuslan in Montreal as Unibroue Dont do tours,
Heading to Brooklyn Brewery and to Sam Adams.

Thats more than plenty in my Mrs opinion so any Pubs and Places i can "accidentally" run into will be of great interest

You can also do a tour of the Harpoon brewery in Boston. It cost about $5 and at the end you get to sample all their beers.

As for NYC, there is a brewpub in/around the Times Square area called Heartland Brewery. I honestly can't remember anything more specific about the location but they did make a pretty great red ale and barley wine. It shouldn't be too hard to find with a little asking around.

Where are you staying in NYC?

I found a couple of bars on the East Side called House of Brews. Two bars located on 50th & 53rd Streets. Somewhere near 7th or 8th Avenue. The one on 53rd became somewhat of my local cos we were in NYC for 8 days and it was only a 20 block walk from our hotel.

If you get to Brooklyn, a trip to Fette Sau for barbecue and local craft beer, Spuyten Duyvil for Belgian style, and Barcade for a great range of US craft beer and old school arcade games. All three are within walking distance of each other and the subway station is right there too.

In Boston, if you go to a game of baseball at Fenway, check out Boston Beerworx. A great range of beers. They were brewing Weizenbock while the pub was packed to rafters when we were there. Also get yourself a pint or two of Sam Adams Boston Brick Red Ale, but seeing as you're doing the tour, you'll get a taste of that anyway. Only available on tap in Boston and I drank a fair few on my trip.

Accidentally go to the Gingerman, close to the Empire State. There are loads of cool bars in NYC. I lost my brooklyn bowl hat only recently and nearly cried.

If you like football, Nevada Smiths. But most football is finished for the Summer. I saw Australia lose 3-1 to USA there, with a packed crowd which included two Aussies. Three pints of Blue Moon before 9am didn't help any.

If you're in New York there are a bunch of craft bars around. Just make sure you try some Dogfish Head. Brooklyn Brewery do amazing beer too. In fact, if you feel like smuggling back any Dogfish I wouldn't complain

New York - Brooklyn Brewery tap room on a weekend is simply awesome. Barcade is a great taphouse also in Brooklyn. Get a t-shirt too.
Boston - The Publick House - just outstanding.

I spent a long weekend in NYC last year (when I was living a little closer).

I went to both the Blind Tiger and Gingerman bars already mentioned by others in this thread. The Gingerman has almost 40 beers on tap, and Blind Tiger around 20, so both are good from a beer tasting perspective. However... I found the Gingerman to be a large soulless bar with zero atmosphere, whilst the Blind Tiger was smaller, packed, and pumping, and still with loads of interesting beers on tap. If you want somewhere quiet to just taste beer - the Gingerman is your place, but I would go to the Blind Tiger.

There's an iphone app called "Find Craft Beer" that uses the info from this site. It costs about $2 and it's pretty handy when your traveling in North America.

I find this largely depends on the customs agent. I've brought back a slab of beer before, and not paid any duty, but I've also been slugged before for bringing back a six pack, so it really depends. Australian customs law makes no distinction between the type of alcohol you bring back. You are allowed 2.25L of alcohol, be it beer, wine or spirits, without paying duty. You should either be willing to a) part with your beer (unlikely) if you get slugged or b) pay duty on the imported beer. If you're lucky, your customs officer will be a dude and let you through. Hard to tell.

More on topic, though, please put up a trip report when you get back of the places you went. I would really like to visit NY and Canada soon, and would love to know which places you visit and how they fare.

Boston
- Bukowski Tavern, Dalton St. Doesn't look much but awesome beer range both on tap and in bottles.
- Harvard: John Harvard Brewery
- Plus one for the Beerworxs next to Fenway Park, and Cask n Flagon is a great bar (cnr behind the Green Monster).

New York
- plenty of great bars, including Yankee Tavern on 161st near River Ave, and also Stan's along River Ave near 161st
- Heartland Brewery, 3 locations in Manhattan. One near Wall St/Seaport was the one I visited.
