I find this largely depends on the customs agent. I've brought back a slab of beer before, and not paid any duty, but I've also been slugged before for bringing back a six pack, so it really depends. Australian customs law makes no distinction between the type of alcohol you bring back. You are allowed 2.25L of alcohol, be it beer, wine or spirits, without paying duty. You should either be willing to a) part with your beer (unlikely) if you get slugged or B) pay duty on the imported beer. If you're lucky, your customs officer will be a dude and let you through. Hard to tell.

Even if you get slugged, it's all based on LAL or actual litres of alcohol. So it won't be as much as you think. Declare the excess and you will more often than not be okay.

The bigger issue is making sure nothing breaks, and also staying under your baggage allowance. We failed on both counts last trip.
