Live in Perth and want to get good information on starting up an all grain set-up at minimal cost as I am a student. Spoke to Ross from Craftbrewer in Queensland and he suggested I post my query on this forum.

Best thing is to see a brew being made on a simple sort of system. Mine is very simple, all gravity fed, and I am in Bayswater and tend to brew midweek. If that works send me a PM (Private Message).

Failing that keep an eye in this forum for the next brew day where 10 to 20 of us in Perth get together and watch someone brewing, and you can pick up several answers to any question you might have.

Roy at TWOC homebrew shop does a demonstration brew on a sunday once a month (last one on the 17th just gone). He usually has two brews going at once and one of those is on a very basic set-up to show the beginner what little you need to get started.
Cheers!

The next demo at TWOC is going to be on 8th july i've been told. The blokes name is roy. 2/40 port pirie street Bibra lake.

Hey Skippy,

If you are planning to start out and you want to keep costs as low as possible, I do suggest Brew in a Bag BIAB as the cheapest and easiest option.

You can get a guide on how to do it here

and a quick photo demonstration with explanations on what is going on here.

The reason I suggest this particular method is because it is cheap, easy to set up and simple to do pretty well. It will get you up and making good AG beer quickly and without too much fuss.

Then once you are a bit more familiar with whats going on, have learned a few of the AG ropes and have a few great beers in your fridge, you can look more closely at the other methods of doing AG. If you think they would suit you better, you can move on, or if like a quite a few people, you find you are happy with BIAB. You can stick with that method.

The beauty of starting with BIAB, is that you will not really have to buy anything that will be useless to you if you choose to change your method. Pretty much all of the gear you will buy for BIAB is common to the other processes, with maybe the exception of the bag itself (you'll see what I meant if you check out the links) and that really only costs 5 or 10 dollars.

Feel free to ask myself or PistolPatch questions on the method. And I am sure that other people who contribute to the BIAB register thread will also be only too happy to help.

Otherwise, I really do concur with the guys who are saying that you should get yourself to a demo, or an invitation to watch someone else brew. It will really help a lot.

Good luck and go to it. You will really enjoy yourself.

Cheers.

Pity I didn't see this thread earlier, just put down two batches today.
Oh well. If you're interested let me know and I'll PM you next time I'm planning a brew.
My setup is not real low tech, but it's not the top of the range either, if nothing else it'll give you a good grasp of the fundamentals.
Roy @ TWOC has a flash HERMS system alongside the plastic bucket system that he encourages people to start with. Well worth a visit.
