Anyone see any reason why an all EKG IPA wouldn't be a good idea?

Also if anyone has any recipe suggestions please let me know.

Cheers

Cant see why not, Im doing an all Willamette this weekend.

Merely a suggestion but a healthy aroma/flavour peppering of Styrians work brilliantly with EKG IMO. To be honest not sure how an all EKG would turn out as I haven't an EKG single hop beer before? Good luck with it MB.

Cheers

I've done a single hop sort of amber beer with pommy malts, and it was really really nice.

Reason why I'm asking is I have over 500g of these hops and want to go crazy! Well not crazy but maybe around 100g of hops in a batch, which is a lot more than I normally do.

If I was going to buy hops I'd be buying probably styrians or fuggles or both, but unless someone wants to do a swap I don't think I'll get it past the finance minister.

Only reason I can think of is that you would need a fair wack of it to get your IBU's up, being a typical aroma hop and low in AA.

I've made two all EKG brews before and they turned out ok (bitter + mild). I prefer the flavours blended with other hops though, my favourite combo is target for bittering, ekg for flavour and stryian right at the end of the boil + a small amount dry hopped. An all EKG IPA may be too ambitious, I'd suggest trying an ordinary bitter first with all EKG to see if you think it would suit a hop loaded IPA.

That said, I have 150g of home grown goldings and it's hard to go past the thought of adding it all to one brew :)

I've made the jaggery pale ale from the Radical Brewing book and thought it was awesome.
Mine turned out at 7.4% and 59IBU so was a bit a palate smasher as well as a trasher.
50g challenger @ 70 minutes and 120g EKG at 5 minutes.
I will make it again in a month or two.

I can't see a problem with an all EKG IPA but IMO would probably need 100g to bitter and then another 100g to finish.

I've got an IPA bittered with target and finished with EKG. It's very malty and about 6.5%. The hopping is probably a bit too subtle for my tastes but not too bad.

Iirc the little creatures special bitter released a couple of months back was 100% EKG and was quite a nice drop. Maybe try a clone of that and up the ipu and color to suit an EIPA

TDA made a "120IBU" all EKG beer that was a beauty, tried it at around 6months old and then again at around 9 months from memeory.
Based on an old recipe I recall, it was just so surprisingly smooth and full of character a pleasure to drink.

Got to try that one day,
BB

Mark/ Chappo,
If you want to try a commercial beer with all EKG to see what it's like, grab a bottle of Summer Lightning by the Hopback Brewery.

Thanks Peter.

I'm thinking I may first make a pale ale with about 100gm of EKG and only 5% or so to see how I like it, and then if I want to make a monster later on I will.

I'll probably try to recreate something like James Squire IPA as far as malt goes.

Mark,

I tried an english IPA the other night, I'm pretty sure it was all EKG and very tasty. A tad roasty on the malt bill (to quote Seinfeld "not that there's anything wrong with that" :p ) and very drinkable.

Brewed by Brendo, so see if you can hit him up for the recipe. Was a good beer.

Cheers SJ
