Hi all,

I'm a new brewer(2nd brew down at the moment), and brewing a bachus and bailey alaskan ice beer, 500 dex and 500 LME. Pitched at 28 and fermenting at 22.

After 5 days the brew has started foaming heaps through the air lock. the result is a scungey fermenter top and air lock.

Should i be worried about infection back through the air lock? Should i take air lock out and clean and sanatize it and top of fermenter? Or will i be ok just leaving it?

I was originally planning leaving it in the primary for 2 weeks but now should i consider racking to a secondary for the first time. Any thoughts?

Tks to all of u who regularly post and provide loads of information for newbies like myself. this site kicks ass :D

Had this happen a number of times with Coopers kits and kit yeast, all I did was clean up the mess and replace the water in the airlock repeatedly, No infections just a mess.

Probably the tidiest alternative is a blow off tube. Pop that into a search for some more info but here is a piccy to get things started :)
Cheers
Doug

Hi ahbeermyoneweakness.......( Something )
How many lt's and what size fermentor did u use ?.
racking 2 2ndary can be risky, as previous posts, it may not be needed.

Man u guys are fast. tks!

Freemasha.

23ltrs in a 30 litre fermenter.

You had froth out the top of a 30L fermenter? Crazy. I got it with my last batch using a 25L fermenter but I didn't think it would happen with a 30L carboy. My old man said he used to just use glad wrap over the top and didn't have any problems.

I just cleaned the airlock and put water back in it and at the end of fermentation I didn't have any funny smells so I guess it was OK. I think during that time the CO2 being released will stop nasties getting in anyway.
