Hi All,

I made an AG batch (My first) with a load of unroasted malted barley (Malted a bag of whole barley @ home), this was more an experiment and a test to see how an All Grain Brew would run with my amateur setup

I wanted to know whether anyone else has done a brew using 100% unroasted barley and what flavours they discovered.

My beer was given Vic secret as bittering hops and finished off with El Dorado hops 20 mins before taking off the boil.

Beer has been bottled for 5 days so far,I did crack one open to get a taste and there was some carbonation (not much) and the flavour was strange but familiar to a beer I have had in the past. I just wanted your opinions on what I might expect :beerbang:

Cheers,

I've done malted unroasted wheat and it was very raw tasting. Even with roasted malted wheat there isn't much flavour.

The barley husk seems to be responsible for a lot of flavour, even with lightly roasted barley such as would be the case with pilsner malt etc.

If you plan on doing a lot of brewing with raw malted barley, then I recommend at least adding some spec grains to put some flavour into it.

It will taste rather grassy/grainy.

Did you cure the malt or just air dry it?
