Just wondering if a 44L esky is too big for a mash vessel for a single (4-5kg) brew, just batch sparging, before I go drilling a hole?

Its not too big, better too big than too small. If your worried, you can put some alu foil over the top of the mash or cut some ice cooler type foam to fit in. If keen, can fill the lid with some expanding foam to insulate it. Also easier
to buy an esky with a drain hole :)

cheers

Redbeard is on the money, you can also do double batches in them too in a squeeze!
