From what Ive been trying to put together it seems that Dins Aromatic is to be treated as more of an amber malt. And that Wey Carabelge is somewhere between a crystal and an amber. It's described as light crystal characteristic but can be used up to 30%.

I really have no idea just a stab in the dark but hopefully someone more experienced and who has brewed with them can point you in the right direction.


Myself I would like to know the similarities and differences between Dings Biscuit and Wey Abbey. I cant decide between the two and dont think Ill get around to using both for awhile.

We're currently only offering the Bairds Amber, as the price on Simpson's stuff is horrendous. If you've got your heart set on the Simpsons, I can certainly make enquiries on availability/price & get Grainer to update the spreadsheet?

I've pulled-up the COA's on both those grains, but they obviously don't tell the whole story. If you want, I can post-up the numbers, but googling the differences would probably serve you better.

As per above, the COA's don't really help much & it looks like you've already done some research.

I've never brewed with them, so no anecdotal info. available, but I can tell you that the Ding's Aromatic doesn't smell anything like either a crystal or amber malt - if anything, it smells kinda acidic (but the COA says pH is 5.03, so go figure).

If you want the numbers, I can post them up &/or give a few grains a chew later on & give you some subjective feedback?

Yeah, I'm trying to work out where Aromatic sits amongst the specs. I was under the impression Amber (well at least the Simpsons) is the UK version of Biscuit, and Victory is the U.S. version of Amber. Which leaves me wondering wtf about Aromatic. So CBB's comment that it's different to everything kinda makes sense.
Yeah, Carabelge seems to be a crystal rather than a roast, but again I'm not sure wtf about Aromatic.

CBB (Martin, is that you?), the spec sheets would be great if you can be bothered. Either PM or post here. If it's a hassle don't stress. I've got some info on them (- tbh I go heavily by colour).

In terms of Bairds vs Simpsons I'm guessing they're similar (yes?), so Bairds would be fine.

My issue is I've got several kilos of Victory and I'm almost out of Simpsons Amber (which has been awesome - what doesn't it go into!?!). So I guess I'd wonder if my assumption about the interchangeability of Amber/Victory/Biscuit is correct, or correct enough? If so, I'll stick with using victory, if not, I might need to grab some of one of the other 2.

Basically I have a problem resisting the temptation of buying every type of spec grain available. So I'm trying to differentiate between want and need :lol:

Cheers for the link Grainer. I've got and used it - it's a great comparison chart! Unfortunately there's one or 2 doozies on it - eg: Amber = Victory = Melanoiden = Biscuit/Aromatic.
WTF?? Aromatic and Biscuit are interchangeable? Seems a bit odd ... Hence my original query, which was basically triggered by seeing this a few nights ago.

Option B I guess is just buy a few kgs and get CBB to bag and tag separately and I'll do a separate transaction.

Re: diff btw Abbey and Biscuit, I had assumed Abbey was somewhere between Amber/Biscuit and Aromatic. Just rereading it now, it sounds like it might actually be more like Weyermann's version of Amber/Biscuit itself.

Get both. Then you don't need to think about it :lol:

EDIT - just checked the listings on Clever Brewing for specs compared to my copy of ianh's spreadsheet, and then Wey's website. CB says Abbey malt has a colour of 24 EBC, whereas Wey say 40-50 EBC.
CBB, have the specs for some of these grains changed more recently? In which case i'll need to update my spreadsheet!

Yeah, CBB = Martin. Like it's a secret or something??

Here's what I can give you from the COA's of our current stocks for you on the grains you mentioned (the stuff we order-in for the BB may be different):

Carabelge - BB 5/16. EBC-35
Melanoidin - BB 8/16. EBC-80
Abbey - BB 6/16. EBC-45

Dingemans stuff is a little different. There's no production date or BB on the bags & it only states "24/2/15" on both the COA's, so draw your own conclusions. Obviously, the higher-roasted stuff will have a better shelf-life than base-malts.

Aromatic - 50EBC
Biscuit - 69 EBC

I'm yet to confirm intentions from the boss, but if we end-up with incomplete split bags at the cut-off date, I see no reason we couldn't fill as many "intended" splits from our current stocks at BB prices. Win-win for everyone, as long as current CB stocks permit.

Yep, it's available from our supplier (it's just called "Premium" Pilsner malt). Price would be the same as the standard Pils malts.

Grainer, if you're doing amendments, you may as well add that to the list as well as the Simpson's Amber.
