I cultured this starter up from a Ringwood Ale Yeast Smackpack. Can anyone tell me what the dark ring is within the yeast sediment?

Not sure what it is may be trub or dead/tired yeast. But all my harvested yeasts have it, and I think it almost works as a nutrient next time you get to put it on the stir plate starters get better and better.

Trub - just bits and pieces that have come out of solution, mostly Proteins, Glucans, possibly tannins...
Don't worry about it, it will end up in the trub at the bottom of the fermenter.
