Hey men,

I'm staying a few days at the Hotel Como in Chapel Street Melb and then a few days at Inchcolm Hotel Wickham Terrace Brisvegas.

If anyone can recommend Pubs or Micros in the area for some good beers and food it would be much appreciated!

I know about Squire bar in Melb but don't like it since its moved down to the docklands. Preferred the original site.

Benno.

Hey Benny,

Squires is still at the Portland Hotel - they have simply added an additional location (docklands).

Plenty of places to drink in melb...

Pubs
Young & jacksons - has a good selection of taps and bottles - have their own brew - Naked Ale
Transport - a bit sterile, but a hell of a lot of beer on offer
Cookie - some good brews and food

Micros
Mountain Goat (Richmond) is open Wed & Fri nights

i am sure others will add other places - plenty on offer. Also, do a search, this topic has come up a bunch of times.

Cheers,

Brendo

Yep, this topic comes up a bit. But Im always happy to turn my mind to good pubs

If you're in Chapel st then here are some closer options

1. Bells hotel, South Melbourne
A brew pub. Certainly not what it used to be, but worth visiting. Good TAB bar if you are that way inclined.

2. Local tap house, St Kilda
Plenty of beers. Tap and bottle. Check web site for list.
www.thelocal.com.au

3. Borsch, Vodka and tears, Chapel St
Not beer. But very good Polish cafe with 90+ types of vodka

I think Brisvegas is BYO

Cheers
Paul

Inchcombe - brings back memories, it was a famous suite of medical specialists before it got turned into a hotel, regualarly got my ears syringed there. Beautiful oak panelling, hope they've preserved it well.

If you walk down the hill a couple of hundred m. to Central Station there's a not too bad "Platform Bar" - not the megaswill TAB outlet one in the main concourse, it's the one in the hotel at the station.

Also you can hop a train one stop to Fortitude Valley and see what's on tap at the Elephant and Wheelbarrow also on Wickham but the Valley end of the street. Exit Station onto Brunswick St, left, right. Not recommended weekend evenings as full of bingeing gen ys. but great during the week. Don't try to walk home after dark unless you have a machine gun with you, go back on the train.

I live at about your equivalent of Terrigal so won't be joining you for a coldie, but enjoy :icon_cheers:

Edit: Chinatown , opposite the E&W, for food if you like Chinese, Viet, Thai etc.

Other alternative you may want to have a look at might be the International Hotel at Spring Hill which is only a few kms away.

Rudi used to do tours of the brewery and was always keen for a few beers after. Cant say Im a huge fan of the beers there, but might be something different.

There is a brew pub on Boundary Rd - The International Hotel, Spring Hill (just behind St Andrews Hospital), pick of the range is the Irish Red.

Edit : beaten again.

+1 - went there a few weeks ago - reminiscient of the freo brewery, but without all the cool shiny bits and unitanks.

+1 for the Local in Carlisle St, St Kilda. you won't go thirsty, and it's at the end of chapel st. take a tram. those green things, you know?

or come to the west - Newport Junction hotel has a couple of groovy local drops. Newport Pale Ale, a bitter and a whitbeer that i adore.

Brisbane wise much better served to hook back down Ann St (or take the train from Brunswick St to Central) and visit the Platform bar. Nice range of locals on tap and a good bottled range too.
Very much a beer focused bar which deserves support in my book.
With the demise of the Brewhouse about the only really decent place to drink in Brisbane CBD and close by.
Pig & Whistles and also the Elephant and Wheelbarrow not far from that hotel sometimes have decent stuff on.

Have to disagree about LC beer hall atmosphere. IMO it's like drinking LC in an indoor cricket center. The Lambs go Bar is the better option round that way.
The Belgian is worth the visit.

Inchcombe is actually on the Terrace, just up the hill from Central Station, not in the Valley end of Whickham St which runs on to Newstead. Agree with the Platform Bar, much improved since the days when it was an Irish bar IIRC. short walk down the hill, longer stagger back :super:

Or go down the steps from Central Station where a quick squiz left & right will locate the Rubber Stamp. Not a bad selection of Australian craft & imported beers but make sure you've got a full wallet. :D

TP

If you make it into Melbourne CBD try Mrs parma'a, they only sell Victorian Micro Brewerey beers and also do a Mean Parma as well. They sell on tap Hargreaves, Goat, Bridge Road, 2 Brothers, Grand Ridge , Otway estate and usually 2 or 3 others. It is in Little Bourke Street so worth checking out.
